  • Ain't It The Truth

I was reading an article in the Washington Post today by George Will about the Redskins name issue. In the article he quotes a remark Thomas Sowell made earlier in a similar article. Since we all have come across the type of person described, I wanted to share it here.

Some people are in the business of being offended, just as Campbell is in the business of making soup.

Non-fratch is that some of the alternative names have been very clever. (Life-long fan here.)

I'd like to see Planters buy the team, keep the name, and redesign the logo. After all, "redskins" is a legitimate term for a variety of peanut, so the patent and trademark office would have no leg to stand on about the name being offensive.

That's how it's panning out in my home city. The team name for the CFL team is the Eskimos which was causing concern when the Redskins fiasco blew up. Unlike the Redskins though, the Eskimos do not have any racist imagery towards it. The closest thing we have to imagery in fact is a polar bear for the mascot, so it's accurate. (Eskimo means "eaters of raw meat" which is accurate for a polar bear)

So despite an offensive history, there's no offensive imagery going on with our team name so it's a live and let live. A number of Inuit people were interviewed in fact and the responses ranged from "no concern" to "don't make them change it".

When I saw this, I was about to say, "They couldn't be any worse than the owner they have now," but I did a little research. Planters is owned by Kraft Foods. The chairman and CEO of Kraft Foods is Bob Kraft. Bob Kraft is also the owner of the New England Patriots.

Bummer! Pretty sure you're not allowed to own more than one franchise.
