  • Credit Woes

A lady came up to the register, and, like I'm supposed to, I asked her if she wanted to open a store charge card. Most people tell me no, say they already have one, or make some sort of joke about their husband and we just move in. Not this lady. She stopped, looking me dead in the eye and asked me,

"Do you know that every card you open affects your credit score?"

I just responded back that I did, but if was just my job to ask. She kind of huffed and muttered about young kids not knowing things like that.

First of all, I'm over thirty. While perspective is relative, I'm generally not a "young kid". And second, I do fully understand the ins and outs of the credit card. I've talked two coworkers out of opening cards, mostly by pointing out the interest rate. And when a "young kid" comes in and opens one, I take the time to explain the card in detail to them. It has turned away accounts, but I'd prefer to not be someone's first stepping stone to bad credit.

But seriously, what did she expect? One word from her and now I will single handedly halt the credit card movement?

Sound the alarms, PIXI! You can make a difference!

What, like she was shocked she was asked suddenly this time?

I'm so glad we don't have to ask this question. They want us to, but nobody does. We do, however, have to ask if the customers want the service/replacement plans, which I personally think are a complete waste of money. If any single customer REALLY wanted to know what I think of credit cards, service plans, and the general consumerism of cheap Chinese junk, they would probably wonder why the hell I'm a cashier at HellMart
Sometimes customers remind me of zombies, but I'm pretty sure that zombies are smarter.

I understand stores asking "will you be putting this on your (Brand) card"? But I wish they wouldn't invite me to sign up to save 20% off my pack of AA batteries or 6-pack of socks. That just makes the script look stupid.

It could be worse. Originally, the company that issued the cards let you open 3 accounts so even if they had a card we were supposed to push them to open another. I never did that. That screams of trouble, but some of my coworkers did. Thankfully it would sold to someone else who now only let's people have one.

On the other hand, when the offer was made to get a discount AND free delivery and installation when I bought my new washer and drier set, I gladly accepted.

I opted for the "store" version of the card which only works at that chain. Now I get offers to convert to the full-blown credit card version of the card. I rarely shop there anymore though.

The stores do this because they make boatloads of money on it. You'll never balance out what you saved on that initial discount, even if it was on an expensive item, with what you'll pay in interest charges.

This. You only pay interest charges if you don't pay your bill in full. I think too many people view credit cards as an excuse to buy more than they can afford, rather than a more convenient way to pay. (And just to be clear, I'm not talking about people who find themselves in financial straits due to things outside their control like losing a job or having high medical bills.) I'm sure my Visa company must love me because I always pay in full, on time.

Truth. You know what credit card companies call people who pay their bills on time, in full, every month?

Yep. Due to 0% offers and very carefully watching what I was buying I just spent a year carrying £10k~ of debt due to moving. Which I never paid any interest on and only about £100 in money transfer fees for actually having money in my bank for spending on non-card related stuff.

The minute I got my divorce money? I paid it off.
I am so SO glad I was not present for this. There would have been an unpleasant duct tape incident. - Joi

Cancelled accounts? Truth for my Mom once. She had other credit cards, so it just became an entertaining anecdote rather than an actual problem.
