  • How did I get free tea?

Not sure where to post this.

So I was in the drive-thru for the coffee shop. There was a car at the speaker and another car behind them. It was taking a long time for the car at the speaker for whatever reason. Whatevs, I pulled out my phone and started fiddling around. The car finished their order, the next car pulled up, ordered, and pulled around, and then I ordered my iced pineapple green tea and pulled around to wait. By now there were several cars behind me, too.

The first car again took forever at the window. It looked like it was just a couple drinks but whatevs. I was playing with my phone, texting Hubs about a car that drove by that was so old, the trunk was an actual trunk, like a suitcase.

The first car finally finished, the next car went up and paid with cash and got their coffee, and then...

Barista: "I'm sorry, what was your drink again? It didn't make it in the system."
Me: "Oh, I had the small iced pineapple green."
    Barista: "Okay."
Me: *hands over visa and loyalty card*
Barista: *takes cards, pauses, hands them back* "You know, it's just on us today, okay?"
    Me: "Um...okay? Are you sure?"

But by then she'd vanished to go fetch my drink. She handed it, wished me a nice day, and I moved along.

So...was it because of the wait? Or was their CC machine down? (I think I saw the person ahead of me pay with cash. She handed something to the barista, anyway.)

I felt bad too 'cause no CC charge slip means I couldn't tip, since I don't carry cash (I have to always be careful when redeeming free drinks earned through their loyalty program and be sure to only redeem them when I'm buying a food item or something else so there's a CC slip for me to add a tip to). I mean, I'll be sure to tip extra next time, but still.

I've had cashiers give out freebies without me asking, but usually because there's a "sorry about the wait" or something indicating why they are offering me said freebie. This was just "Yeah, here, have some free tea" without any explanation and like yeah that's cool but now I'm confused.

Huh. My guess would be a combination of 'sorry for the wait' and not wanting to take the time (and keep you waiting even longer) to enter the order since she'd said that it didn't get put into their system (or at least that's what got out of it 'didn't make it in the system'). Regardless, a nice bright spot.
