  • Not even close.....

We have a lock box outside where our customers can drop off the envelopes containing their keys, paperwork, and whatnot after-hours. It's opened up in the morning and checked to see what's been left overnight. A glorified mailbox, the only that can fit through the slot, are envelopes.

It has our name plastered all over it.

Nowhere on it does it say it's a drop box for parking tickets.

Nowhere on it does it say it's a drop box for parking tickets issued by the University

In fact, it says "FOR USE BY FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD CUSTOMERS ONLY" on it.

    Twice.

So, to my non-surprise, some dope fed it a parking ticket he received from the university. You're supposed to mail those in to them, guess he thought he was saving the hassle of postage (because his address was clearly filled out on the envelope) and figured we were "close enough".

Now, campus is only 3 blocks away.... I could have just dropped it off at the Univ. Parking Office on my next trip going that way.... could have.......

But I'll be darned if I'm going to reward gross negligence/sloth that way.

I took the ticket, put it in a much larger envelope and enclosed a letter I quickly knocked out on the secretary's computer.

    Sir,

This ticket was found inside the drop box for Friendly Neighborhood Towing, XXX Main St, Annytown, Pennsyltucky.

It is apparently a parking ticket issued by MAJOR UNIVERSITY.

We are not MAJOR UNIVERSITY, nor affiliated with them in any way.

You must submit this to the parking office at MAJOR UNIVERSITY if you wish for it to be paid. We cannot process parking tickets or bills from other agencies/corporations besides ourselves.

Furthermore, we will not be held responsible for any fines/fees or other late charges should this ticket be considered delinquent, our box is clearly marked for our customers only, and not for those of MAJOR UNIVERSITY.

    Thank You.

I then DID drive 3 blocks, a much more productive 3 blocks....... to the post office. And mailed it back to him.

    What can I say?

    Being dumb OUGHT to hurt.

Hey, you were nice to have returned it to him.

I work with some types who would have just thrown it away as not being their concern.

I think I may have "forgotten" to put my return address or a stamp on it and and just let the guy deal with the postage due when he gets it back. When he comes by to complain about the postage due, I would simply hand him the fifty cents and send him on his way while laughing at the fact that he wasted more gas than that just to get 2 quarters.

Reminds me of a story from Acts of Gord.

Woman had tried to rent a Playstation or something... showed Gord her husband's driver's license for ID. She didn't have hers, so Gord didn't rent to her. This was, of course, the most HORRIBLE THING EVER AND WAH YOU'RE BEING SO UNFAIR and she went stomping out of the store with nothing.

Gord realized she'd forgotten the husband's driver's license, so he politely mailed it back to her.

No one had told Gord that the Canadian Post Office had just raised the cost of stamps by .02.

Now the woman calls back and is irate - her husband can't drive to work and they're losing money and it's ALL GORD'S FAULT and THEY'LL SUE!

So he dropped off the driver's license at the courthouse, since they were going to be headed there to sue him, anyway.

When the woman called back to complain again, Gord's response was: "Hey - I do impressions. This is my impression of a person hanging up on someone who drinks too much."

Very noble, Agra. I have no doubt that most I work with would feed that to the closest paper shredder.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

I would have put it out with "Not at this Address" on it in red, and let the USPS deal with it.

I would have too, but he didn't even put postage on it, he just dropped it in our box.

I remember that the woman was also pissed because her husband had outstanding tickets and if they picked up the License at the court house. The Court would force them to pay the fines.

I loved Acts of Gord. I wish he would update again (or open a new store)

Sometimes, I feel like I may actually be channeling Gord, when recounting some of my tales. If it really IS him, I hope to do him proud. That was one of my favorite sites before I found CS.

Honestly, I would have marked it "Return to Sender, wrong address." and "Postage Due".
