In my area there's a particular radio station that hosts 'the Kane Show.'
They've run a story for the last several weeks about 'Couch Cat'
Someone he knows bought a couch off Craigslist. He picks it up from the lady's house, gets it home, and hears something...He takes off the bottom of the couch and finds a CAT inside! The cat had a bunch of toys up inside the couch too. He calls the lady and tells her her cat accidentally got stuck in the couch.
She tells him it's not her cat.
So he calls the Kane show asking for advice on caring for a cat and trying to find it a home; lots of people call in with advice and over the course of the week the guy starts getting attached to the cat The Kane show invites the woman on the show to ask if she knows how the cat got in the couch; she only insists it's not her cat!
The guy brings the cat to the vet and lo and behold...it's microchipped and REGISTERED TO THE CRAIGSLIST LADY!
So the Kane show talks to her again and she finally fesses-up that it's her cat, but she still doesn't want it.
Que this guy and Couch Cat getting tons of fans, theme songs, publicity for the show, etc.
Craigslist Lady calls the show and tells them that NOW she wants her cat back!
(So she's recorded first saying it's not her cat, then it's hers but she doesn't want it, basically giving up her claim to it; meanwhile guy is footing the bill for care)
Guy says he likes that cat now and it's his and the Kane show talks about how crazy this lady is. Que Lady writing certified letters to the show telling them to stop slandering her. They ignore her, saying that it's not slander if it's true, freedom of speech etch.
Que Lady calling the show about a week later and telling them, on air, that (in this past week) she has 'TRADEMARKED' the name "Couch Cat" and mails them a certified letter containing a bill for over 3000$, saying that they owe her for every time they say Couch Cat on their air! They ask her questions, argue that they invented the phrase in the first place and how will she possibly police all the people who call the show and say Couch Cat of their own volition, but she always responds "you'll have to talk to my lawyer!" and won't answer. Several people called in and called bulls*it on the lady having a trademark or a lawyer and told her that she better drop the lawyer and get a doctor instead!
Couch cat so far loves his new 'owner' and even sneaks in to sleep with him in bed. All the toys being in the couch, and the cat appearing to be sealed in the couch, leads the people involved to think that she put the cat in there on purpose.
I am hoping that by this crazy lady being recorded saying both it's not her cat, and then she doesn't want it, means that she's therefore abandoned the cat and can't take any legal action against the guy to get the cat back...At the very least I would charge her with animal abandonment, seeing as how this guy could very well have booted the cat out the door after buying the couch.
PS. I have no clue how I managed to put this in this section rather than Sightings!
