  • Political phone calls

Yep, it's political season again. I've been getting scores of phone calls from groups supporting various Arizona politicians.

The problem? I don't live in Arizona, and have not lived there for SEVEN YEARS!!! How do they not notice the non-Arizona area code when they dial my number?!

These are mostly robo-calls. Is there a way to get them to stop?
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Yeah. Unplug your phone until after the election.

Political campaigns are exempt from the Do Not Call registry.

Not of which I am aware, unless they're live and you can tell them to delist you. I dunno if they HAVE to, but pointing out that they are wasting their own time/money may help. For the robocalls -- see if yer provider has a callblock service?

Almost as annoying as political phone calls are the political ads that you get on YouTube or Hulu.

At least on YouTube you can usually skip past them after the first five seconds or so, but on Hulu I have to sit through the whole thing.

I'm fortunate in that I don't have to deal with political phone calls. While the house has a phone, I only have a cell phone, and half the day it's switched off while I'm at work.

If you get one that's an actual person, tell them if they call you again you're voting for the other candidate.

I've actually pulled that before, mjr -- Once I know who they're pushing for, I tell them that getting their call is making me wanna vote for the OTHER guy. The response? *click*

Jay - Refreshing the page (manually or via f5) will normally nuke any ads, too. Comes in handy when you have a 3-minute long unskippable ad in front of a 30-second sound byte. I have to do that simply because my Firefox (w/NoScript) doesn't like YT...Even tho I have everything whitelisted there except doubleclick. Most videos I watch have the right-side third or so covered by a huge white or black block of nothing -- refreshing clears it.

I'll keep this in mind for when I'm trying to watch a <30 sec video and get stuck with some 2+ minute movie trailer ad.

I've been telling political advertisers who've called or visited this week that they're too late. If they want to influence my vote, they've got to get to me before I mail my absentee ballot.

In MN, anybody can do an absentee ballot for any reason. It's quite nice. No long lines or crazy traffic, and I get to take my time to research the candidates before casting my vote. The return envelope is prepaid, and though you need to get your signature witnessed or notarized, it can be witnessed by another registered voter, so there's no cost to the voter. Love it!

Also in MN, you can view your ballot online on the Secretary of State's website. If the candidate has provided a website to the SoS, you can click a link right there. Makes for really easy research of the candidates!

So if I could give some advice to political candidates, I'd say campaign earlier and provide a website to the SoS.

I suddenly remember Delenn's line from Joe's script. Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

I'm still getting the AZ calls even though I left 2 years ago. Even dumber, I'm getting MAILINGS from the AZ candidates directly to my Los Angeles address!

Same is true in North Carolina, but you don't have to notarize it. Every voter gets mailed an absentee ballot with the list of candidates. But you have to pay your own postage.

I prefer to vote on voting day. You never know when a candidate is going to say/do something really stupid before Election Day. Helps me avoid buyer's remorse, at least some of the time

At least this is the last day for that nonsense. From August 1 to Election Day, we only answer our phone if the number is familiar.

And this is one more reason I love my cellphone callblocker. If you're number isn't in my contacts- straight to voicemail. Still want to talk to me? Great. Leave a message. Otherwise, go away.
