  • Dora vs. Barbie

Hi all, first time poster long time lurker, been around since 07 I think but this is the first time ive ever come out of hiding. I myself dont work my partner M does, and I usually wouldn't have anything to contribute but seeing this seriously made me wtf and I needed to share it.

    Background:

M works for a company here in Australia referred to as Big upside down M, every second Friday I drive him to work so I can go shopping and then pick him up after work.

    /End Background

Yesterday I was waiting for M to finish work as I usually get there about 15 minutes early and browse, he works in the home ent/electronics area of the store. I was browsing dvds when an older woman late thirties I guess asks about video games for kids under 6. I didnt see the games he showed her but I heard her say she didnt want a certain game because it showed racial stereotypes, didn't teach proper language skills and it was a bunch of gibberish, she then proceeded to purchase a barbie dress up game.

When I asked him about it after, the game in question?

    Dora the Explorer.

I just wtf because my own kids have a Dora game and I dont think Barbie is any more educational than something that teaches you a second language at an early age.

Anyway, sorry about the long post but I really didn't think these sort of people existed, not in Australia anyway, guess Im proved wrong.

I really don't like Dora, I have no reason for this she just scares me. That womans reasoning however has got me scratching my head.

Maybe barbie has changed but when I was girl she taught me how to design clothes. (barbie fashion desinger was my fav computer program. )

I was going to edit the title to add the full word Barbie (no idea what happened there.)

I never liked Dora myself but I have 3 girls so I really get no say in the matter, and from what ive seen the games arent bad, they teach counting and spelling etc. I can only speculate as to why she chose Barbie over Dora, but her reasoning was just idiotic in my opinion, it was like she thought he was at fault for even having the game on the shelf.

I dont know, I just hope her kid enojys the game, even if it is Barbie.

Big upside down M is a frakkin weird place, whichever store you visit. The staff are usually alright but their customers just puzzle the shit out of me.

I won't go in there with my work uniform. Despite the fact they're completely different colours, I will, without fail, get screamed at by some mouth-breather for not helping them. The manager at my local has 'fired me' at least six times now.

The custies there do weird things to the clothing, have meltdowns in the middle of the sports departments, pee in the aisles, and one one memorable occasion, began rutting in the changeroom next to the one I was using!

lol, what? I know little to nothing about Dora or Barbie, but come on! It's not like those super creepy Monster High dolls... It's just funny people want to tell you off about some toy.

those super creepy Monster High dolls.
              GAAAAAAAAH.

The only time we ever sell those fucking things is...this time of year, but we sell enough corporate thinks we need to have a truckload of them sitting in the backroom the rest of the year.

And of all the customers I've waited on this Christmas season, easily the most annoying one was the one who insisted she get the cardboard displayer we got in to display the dolls. Oh, I tried explaining to her that we were much too busy to hang on to the thing for her, but she wouldn't accept no for an answer. We ended up taking her phone number and tossed the thing away anyway when we were done with it. Muahahahaha.

But back to the Monster High dolls: kill them with fire. Except Draculaura, because I imagine her growing up to be Abby from NCIS.

Oh, because sexist stereotypes are soooooo much better. [/sarcasm]

for the record: I do not think barbies are sexist. But if Dora is racist, Then Barbie is sexist.
