  • I need....information

We are a resort. If you want to know about fun activities in the area, I can give you that info. You're going to spend money with us and exploring the area, so that's well within the scope of my job. There are some caveats to this, though. One is that you're a prospective guest who is likely to spend money with us. The other is that my mental database of info is focused on recreation, since people tend to visit us to recreate.

In other words, I will not help you move.

    *phone rings*
    Me: *spiel*
SC: "Yeah, I'm looking to move to the area and I'm just looking for information on buying a house and do I need to buy a house to use the golf course and how do I buy space at the marina and just how does everything work there?"
Me: "Well we do offer public golf and fitness club memberships, but we don't deal in property sales. Were you trying to reach [Same-name-as-Resort Homeowners Association]?"
SC: "So I can get a membership there? What about my boat?"
Me: "You will want to talk to the marina about that. I can get you there information."
SC: "I just want....I just want to know how everything works there and how everything fits together. Why can't you tell me? I want to know how to buy a house because I want to move there."
Me: "This is [The Resort]. I can help you with the golf and health club memberships, but we are not involved with the marina or any sort of property sales. I can get you in touch with the right people if you like."
SC: "Can't you just look it up and send me the information?"
Me: "......sure, I will do that. What is your email?"

So I sent him a link to the local real estate office.

Seriously, unless you offer me a job to be your personal assistant, my priority is the guests who are actually spending money at the resort. I have other phone calls and emails from paying guests to respond to as well as a huge stack of gift cards orders to process, oh and the guests lining up right in front of me as well. Do your own damn research or show me some green; I'm not a free library for your convenience.

I'd say you handled that well. Anything else you say would somehow bind the realtor...in this SC's mind at least.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

"Yeah, I just got off the phone with your man at the beachfront office. He was very unhepful, all he could talk about was the free golf club memberships, and tried to sell me a fitness club subscription. He didn't know a damn thing about buying a house down there. You really should hire better people!"

"Er, Sir, we do not HAVE a beachfront office; only this one..."

OK, that person was an idiot. Who the heck calls a resort to get info like that??? I'd have told him to Google the name of the town and that will give him all the links he'll ever need for local info. I love your solution, though.

        Seriously, what a jerk.

Have you forgotten the name of the forum, Moon?
