    my contract with Bog Red US Wireless Company is coming to an end on the 31st and I am sad. Mostly because the thought of job hunting is bringing up all the pain and humiliation of being 16 months unemployed again; and also because I genuinely like my coworkers and managers and the customers are better than at Aid of Rite.

    Anyway, background: I know next to nothing how fraud prevention works, but I do know that if you are suspicious, my coworkers will place a flag and hold on your account that lasts for 72 hours. Suspicious behavior may include: coming into my store and demanding 4 lines, don't care what plan, don't have numbers to port over from other carriers, don't want us to check credit or sign up for the SHARP program that requires it and don't really want us to activate the phone either. People do this so they can take the phones and send them overseas to sell for thousands of dollars in markup (as many did during the iFruit 6 phone launch) or sell them locally for drug money or whatever else. If you mark an account as fraud, you obviously don't tell the customer it's fraud as they may beat you up or cut you.

    Now, three 18 year old wannabe rapstars come into the store, baseball hats on backwards, baggy tracksuits, enough gold chains to make Flava Flav jealous, the works. They went straight to one of my coworkers and demanded 3 lines, not porting from another carrier since "bro we never had phones before yo" and they want the most expensive versions of iFruit 6 we have. One of them starts vaping in the store, blowing the smoke all over. Coworker Not Khaleesi looks at them and immediately flags their account as fraud. She then tells them that "yep it'll be approved in 3 days, sorry that we can't help you tonight, Worst Purchase may have the phone in stock". They leave.

    In between them going to Worst Purchase and coming back to our store, they called Customer Service, who promptly told them "oh yeah they flagged your account as fraud, guys, sorry."

    They come back, smelling like weed. They demand a manager. Start shrieking that "yo that blond bitch flagged us for fraud, yo, she totally needs to be fucked up!" One pounds his fists on the counter near where Not Khaleesi is and she stares at them with her resting bitch face. Manager comes by and makes soothing talk at them. They leave. Manager then calls Customer Service and rips them a glorious new asshole for endangering his employee. Customer Service gives manager the verbal middle finger and hang up.

      Eh, perhaps both to be honest. What rational customer screams at someone for fraud? I'd be angry but I sure wouldn't run into the store and scream and carry on.

      That plus the vaping in the store. I don't care if it's water vapor, there is something in it that makes my skin/eyes/throat itch. If I smoked I would treat it like a regular cigarette and do it outside.

        Sounds like they were pissed that they were spotted for what they were. They come back smelling like weed? Sorry, whatever one thinks about it, that stuff is illegal in most places; and threatening people, using foul language? All that plus the original signs point to scammers.

          I've never worked phones for a cellular phone company, so I wouldn't know. But if somebody calls them questioning why they can't get their phones for another 72 hours, do they have to say it's because they've been flagged for fraud or is there something else they could say to put them off?

            I would have called the police and filed a report. They might have actually F***ed up the employee.

            As for Customer Service, someone needs written up (if first offense). Fired if more then first offense. Sure, they may never have worked on the front lines (see first offense) but discretion is still important.

              Irv asked what I was wondering. If you think someone's trying to commit fraud, do you just keep putting them off until they stop asking? Is there some point at which someone (maybe a manager?) tells them they've been flagged for fraud, or what?

              ETA: In other words, what happens when the 72 hours are up?

                I figured not doing credit check or not activating a phone would pretty much be against company policy. That's what I would have told these fine upstanding young gentlemen since they'd never had a phone before. Those steps are required by law, after all. It's just standard procedure.

                    I am curious, if someone is willing to pay for a phone, why does it have to be activated? I may be a bit naive.

                    Also, just curious, why is your coworker's nickname Not Khaleesi? Is she like the opposite of Khaleesi?

                      I'm with Silent-Hunter...at my store, if someone wants to come in and buy out my entire stock of iPhones off-contract, with cash, the only question I ask is, "do you need a bag?"

                      However, if any phone is put onto a postpaid plan at all (as in, discounted in any way), then a credit check is mandatory, and it comes with either the standard Early Termination Fee or a payment program that puts you on the hook for the entire cost of the device.

                        My guess is the OP's employer wants the service plan to go along with the phone, because that's where the profit is.

                        Or at the very least doesn't want the phone to be hocked for drugs or sold on a black market abroad.

                            Firstly, a rep should NEVER tell a customer they've been flagged for fraud in an instance like this. I usually just say that we are "having some systems issues" at the moment and they'll have to wait until later. Some come back, some don't. I've worked for several wireless carriers including Big Red and they've all had a dedicated Fraud department for just these kinds of issues.

                            2. I don't see someone wanting to buy iphone 6s at full price with cash as a problem. If they want to pay with plastic, that would send up alarm bells with me, at least with individuals like the OP described.

                            3. Pretty much all the major carriers will let you buy a non activated phone either in store or online so long as you've got the money.
