  • A Whole Day's Worth of SCs--long, but entertaining

I have been sick as a dog all day; I'm not even sure I can remember them all. But I will try:

#1 So I have a newer guy in my senior citizen crowd. He usually orders the same thing every day. It takes me 2 minutes to make, and he stands at the counter the entire time. Mildly annoying, but what I don't get is that when he's done eating, instead of walking the 3 feet to the trashcan to throw away his little paper tray, he walks the 4 feet to my counter to deposit it there, every single day. Uh, what am I supposed to do with that? So today I made a point to walk around my counter, pick it up, and deposit it in the trash by him. I didn't make a huge production, but I acciddently slammed the door thingy. He looked up and so did a few others and I said, "sorry" with an oops look on my face. I really didn't mean to do it, but it got the point across. His response? "You threw it out?" "I can't re-use that," I replied. *I know you probably lived through the Depression, but there are food safety laws now. It's 2007.* We'll see what he does tomorrow.

#2 So I was obviously putting an order together, gloves on and the whole nine yards. Lady (again, older person), asked how much one of the cookies was. I was already miffed becaused I sensed she was one of those who doesn't want to wait. I replied to her, "I don't know off the top of my head. I'd have to look." I was a bit brusque, but I was in a hurry and in the middle of helping someone else. And my answer was true. I know the prices of most stuff, but people don't usually order one cookie by itself, so I was a bit shady. My intent was to look it up when she had her turn. So I finished with the people ahead of her and addressed her order. Her first question was, "How much is a small coffee, or do you have to look that up too?" That was snotty, but I told her the price, and I was nice about it. She did ask again, "So you don't know how much the cookie is?" Without bothering to look it up, I said "not off the top of my head, no." "Then I'll just have the coffee." If she hadn't been passive-aggressive she'd have gotten what she wanted. She works in the mall, so I'm sure she'll be back. Oh, joy.

#3 There's a guy doing construction or something nearby and while he's here he's gonna come in and get a "sausage biscuit" every morning. Note that we don't have biscuits, but whatever, I know what he means. The first time he ordered he said bacon and cheese. Simple misunderstanding--I didn't put egg. I fixed it then and my coworker made a little joke, so he seemed ok. But today he reminded me, as he does every day now, not to forget the egg. I ignored that and continued my exchange with my coworker. (She'd taken the order and I was just coming off break, so I was getting the lowdown before she went back to her dept.) I made the order and gave it to him, none too thrilled. I don't like him anyway, as he comes in and barks his order at me every day. When he came back later for water, he didn't speak a word. He will tomorrow, when he barks his order at me.

#4 This guy turned out to be nice, so I feel bad for teaching him a lesson. But I can't stand when people line-jump. I don't care if you just want a drink; it's first come, first serve, unless I invite you to leave the change on the counter and I hand you a cup. (I will do this for regulars if they are nice enough to wait and not assume they can go ahead.) So this guy grabbed a cup and ended up having to wait not only for the lady in front of him, but the next customers who came in line. He would have gotten out faster if he'd just waited for me to finish with the lady, but now he had to wait longer. And I missed part of their order, so I had to ring them again, so he ended up waiting even longer to pay for his coffee. But to his credit, he didn't comlain, waited nicely, and smiled. So he was a potential SC but didn't go that direction.

I'm debating whether to call in sick for tomorrow morning.
