  • Great Doctor Not So Great Anymore

Our family psychiatrist, who has been amazing these past several years, has acted extremely unprofessionally the other day. I wasn't there, but I heard about it. The background is personal, but the gist of it involves a sibling, substance abuse, and potential jail time.

I'm not sure why they were seeing her at this time, but I think it has something to do trying to get a potential jail sentence reduced. In the past, she helped saved sibling from jail (letter to the court), but this time, she was accusatory, judgmental, and pretty much every bad thing you could be to someone who is at such a low point. She said she didn't want to see him again and that he was most likely going to jail.

So I went online and checked the reviews for this doctor. They were mixed. Some were positive, but the negative ones stood out. One described a very similar experience in which she kicked someone out of her office because she didn't approve of them taking medical marijuana (which is legal in my state). Others accused her of being a fraud who prescribes just enough medication to keep people coming back for more refills. Others mentioned that she never actually listens to patients.

The last one really stood out to me because the last couple of times I saw her, I tried explaining that some medication I was on wasn't working and that I might need something else. She insisted that I just need a higher dosage (I'm not a little guy so it made sense). However, looking back, I never really felt like the meds were doing much of anything.

And now I feel extremely betrayed. My family has put a lot of trust in her and this latest stunt feels like a giant slap in the face. But now I'm starting to wonder if she is a fraud (or at least someone who puts making money before patients). Especially since the therapists I had seemed kind of weary when I mentioned her. I'm definitely going to switch psychiatrists, but I just had to rant about this because it's just one more slap in the face in what is the beginning of a shitty year so far.

Physicians are being held accountable for their prescribing habits. The DEA is sending people who prescribe irresponsibly to jail, and the Medical Boards are revoking their licenses.

A good doctor WILL closely monitor people who get controlled substances and should stop prescribing to anyone who is using enough they may become addicted. So I don't agree with that complaint.

When you're dealing with someone in trouble with the legal system and substance abuse one must remember those patients lie on a regular basis. It's part of the illness.

The higher dosage may help but it may take a couple of weeks before it kicks in. If it still didn't help then changing meds or adding something else may be appropriate.

Of course, it never hurts to get a second opinion.
They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.

He didn't go alone and I didn't hear it from him. So that's not the case here. A trained professional should know that you don't say that shit to someone suffering from anxiety and depression

It's good the DEA and medical board is cracking down on this stuff, but my worry isn't getting addicted, it's that when I did get a second opinion (therapist), he suggested that the medicine I was on was not working. I mentioned this to doc, but she acted confused (like I didn't know what I was talking about) and insisted on increasing the current dosage.

I should also mention that I've been on a lot of different medications, dosages, and combos and medications that I don't even remember everything I've been on. Heck, I don't even remember what it was I tried to get off in my example above, just that doc wouldn't listen.

I believe this subject is already being discussed at fratching.
Perhaps it would be best if we left it there.
Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.
