I have an 3 years old HP desktop running Win 7 Home Premium and it is up to date Windows/programs wise

After battling malware (and winning) a while back I noticed that when I open up various folders containing pictures (jpeg, bmp, gif, etc.) , the normal thumbnails do not appear. what appears is some generic picture of a flower in the foreground and a blank sheet of paper in the background for every picture file in that folder.

I have a feeling that some of the malware damaged my thumbs.db files.

Any suggestions for fixing or repairing????

Deleting your existing thumbs.db files, then closing and reopening those folders, should do the trick. It might take a few minutes for any given folder if they contain a large number of images.

I can not even find the thumbs.db files even though I have the "Show all system and hidden files folders and drivers" checked in my folder options.

I think thumbs.db falls under "hidden/protected system files" -- it's in a checkbox a few more lines down. Try that.

See my post above yours. I had the show hidden/ system/protected files option activated.

I did a search for ANY thumbs.db file and none was found anywhere on my system.

Sorry, I was referring to the one that specifically mentions "protected" files a few rows down. See attached screenie -- you want this UNchecked, unlike what my image shows.

Also, make sure that extensions are shown. The fact that thumbs.db doesn't show up at all suggests that one or both of these are still being hidden.

Thumbnail generation may also be affected by registry corruption, dissociating the file type from the program that generates the thumbnails. If you're using a paint program, like Photoshop or the GIMP, uninstalling and reinstalling it may reinstate these associations. Aside from that, this may give you enough hints to let Google-fu lead you to a fix.

I had tried that also with no effect. I still could not find any thunbs.db anywhere in any folder with pictures

                Will give this a try.

NOW if I can only remember where the file/program associations options are.

Right-click a file (may need to SHIFT-RTCL) and choose Open With.

                  or

Go into Control Panel > Default Programs, and the option will be there

I don't believe that alone will restore thumbnail generation, I think there's some other registry trickiness that flags whether a file type can have thumbnails and whether a program can do so.

I tried both the Default programs AND changed the file associations for bmps jpgs etc. I changed the default program from Nero HomeMedia to Paint to Windows Picture Viewer.

I still only got some generic flower picture.

The pictures files can be viewed in each of the above programs.

None of this makes any sense o_O

The only thing I've got left is to try the system file checker, as -- I think -- they're considered systemfiles.

Close any other programs you may have open. Open a Command prompt as an Administrator (type cmd into the start menu search box but don't hit enter; right click and choose run as administrator). Once it opens, type:

                        sfc /scannow

It shouldn't take long. Once it's done, reboot and check again, see if it helps. Beyond that...No idea x.x

                          Um.

                          http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/15134...umbnail-cache/

I'm also seeing that, if you're low on HD space, Windows will stop generating thumbnails.

This link is for fixing video issues, but shows how thumbnail generation is tied into the OS (and basically shows what a mess it is): https://digitalmediaphile.wordpress....-registry-fix/

Yeah, I'd have to opine you'd need to reinstall your paint program, and that *might* fix it.

Found this, it may help --

                            Method 1
Anytime thumbnails view is enabled or has been enabled in Microsoft Windows the hidden file thumbs.db is automatically created in the same directory as where the thumbnails have been viewed. This file contains the information required by Windows to display the thumbnails for each of the icons and will be placed in every folder thumbnails are viewed.
You can also try the following steps:

                            1. Go to Start, type folder options into the Search box and then press Enter.

                            2. On the View tab, uncheck "Always show icons, never thumbnails".

                            3. Click Apply and then click OK.

                            4. Go to Start, type folder options into the Search box and then press Enter.

                            5. On the View tab, check "Always show icons, never thumbnails".

                            6. Click Apply and then click OK.

                            Method 2
Try to do diskcleanup and the link you may refer is: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup#delete-files-using-disk-cleanup=windows-7

                            =====================

Another page claims that Vista and 7 don't generate thumbs.db at all. Mine sure as hell does o_O

OK tried most of the above

SFC -- some corrupt files that it can not fix

Disk cleanup does NOT show an option for Thumbnails even under the System files option and running as an Admin

Tried the show icons not thumbnails switch back and forth nothing

I still have 95G of free HDD space so HDD space is not really an issue

Will reboot the machine in the morning

The last option given is I will update my Nero programs to the last upgrade I have from about a year ago (purchased and d/l'ed but never installed).

Thanks for the assistance so far.
