  • Audiophiles, I need your help

To start off, take a look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIMG...ature=youtu.be

That is my current audio setup as of now, in the living room (recently connected my computer to my 32-inch tv, after I got my wireless home network set up). Main issue thus far has been, every time I go back there to unplug the green plug from, say, the computer to the TV itself, and vice versa, I run the risk of stepping on a plug with enough force to pry it loose, and already, my computer has gotten unplugged while it was on (I want to avoid that in the future)

With that in mind, I've been looking around on Best Buy's website for something that will do what I need, and I found this:

Would anyone else suggest that cable?

The video was very dark, so I can't make out what exactly I'm supposed to be looking at. If there was any audio I didnt hear it because I have my sound turned down at the moment, so apologies if there was an explanation I missed.

What - exactly - are you trying to do with that cable? I'm guessing you want to use it to hook up two different RCA outputs to one input? if that's the case, then you don't want to use that. All that cable is meant to do is adapt mono to stereo RCA connections and vice-versa. If you are trying to connect two completely separate devices into a single input then it's not going to work. There's no filter on those y-adapters to prevent the signal from going the "wrong" way, so when you're feeding one signal in, some of it is going to go to the other device, which might damage the second device, and might also cause interference to be picked up. You would need to use an RCA switcher if this is what you want to do.

If I've gotten that backwards and you want to connect a single OUTput to two different INputs, then that should work.

I agree the video is far to dark to make out anything useful.

My first question is *why* are you having to unplug the cable? From your comments about stepping on things, it sounds like you need a longer cable.

If it's a matter of trying to connect multiple devices to the same input on the TV, you need to either find a way to use a different input or else connect the devices to something that will switch between inputs (many stereos will do that)

BTW, one of the few things I could make out ion the video seemed to be that the RCA jack was *orange*. That's a digital coax input. It needs a special cable to work right. And under no circumstances should you use a splitter on it!

What would help is if you check out the manuals for the computer, the TV and whatever else you are trying to connect, then list the connectors on the TV and on the computer (as well as whatever other device you are dealing with).

Then we can give intelligent advice about what to connect with what and how to do it.

Worst case, make & model of TV and computer would let us look up the connectors.

Typical computer outputs: 3.5mm stereo jacks, speaker out (pale green on most modern computers) line level audio out (pale blue).
Some have digital audio out either as fiber, an orange RCA jack or another 3.5 mm jack.

TVs can get audio in as line level audio (a pair of RCA connectors, one red, one white), digital audio (orange RCA jack) or fiber optic. They can also get audio over an HDMI connector. Not sure if audio goes over a DVI connector or not.

My recommendation would be to check pricing with Newegg.com. Can usually find the exact same gizmo for a much lower price. (especially on cables. BestBuy likes to put a premium on those)

          Yeah, sorry,

I should've used a flashlight in that video...ComputerNecromancer, that's what I mean...I'm basically having to plug the green audio out wire from the subwoofer to either my TV, or my computer

          Some additional information:

          Computer: HP Pavilion p7-1234
Widescreen: Sceptre 32-inch, X32 (this tv has an audio out jack that I plug the green wire into)

From your description and other posts, it looks like you're trying to feed the speaker level input of your subwoofer from either the computer or TV, depending on which source you're using at the time. Since this is a "2 outputs 1 input" situation, a simple "Y" won't work (you NEVER feed back into an output). What you need is an "A/B" switch that has a 1/8" stereo jack as one of the things it switches. The subwoofer plugs into the common port, and you run jumper cables (1/8" stereo male plug on both ends, NOT the automotive kind) from the TV and computer to the 2 inputs.
