  • I'm gonna hazard a guess and say you really don't understand it's a hazard.

Happened last night. Guest asks for a rollaway. Only problem is that his room already has 2 queen beds, and not a lot of room for another bed. It's a fire hazard. I had to break the news. Another guest from the same room comes up to the desk and asks me to explain again why his son can't get a rollaway. Nice, trying to lay the guilt trip on me, I'll lay it back on. I again explain it's a fire hazard and that's something the hotel can be fined for. He says he understands, then leaves.

Throughout the night, I get calls from the room. The switchboard shows what room number they're calling from if it's an internal line. I don't usually get past the greeting before they hang up.

One of them tries a bright plan. He calls from an outside line. Says that he talked to the lady at the desk earlier about getting a rollaway. I offer to bring one to his room. He declines saying his son will pick it up. I ask him for a room number. He tells me a different room number on the 3rd floor instead of their 1st floor room. I tell them I'll be right up with it since I have to go up to the 2nd floor anyways to access the closet they're all stored in.

I get to the 3rd floor room, and the guy tells me he never ordered a rollaway. I apologize and leave, putting the rollaway back in the closet. Funny enough, they gave up after this.

Being the cynical person that I am, I'm expecting that you get some sort of discrimination complaint. You, the evil desk clerk wouldn't give them a roll away because whatever, but you were more than happy to give one to random person in a different room.

Why do people not check if the things that are required to enjoy their stay are available before booking? Since you have rollaways available, I'm guessing these people could have gotten what they wanted with a little planning ahead too.

Because some folks seem to think that hotels have everything up to, and including, entire spare rooms stashed in a back closet somewhere, just in case they are needed.

Was delivering extra blankets a possibility, for a sort of makeshift sleeping bag? I've done it at hotels before.

The first time I stayed by myself in a hotel room was because of a rollaway issue. Big family reunion, smallish hotel, they had run out of rollaways. Probably because the family was a bunch of cheapskates who were likely over-filling the rooms. Anyway, I can't remember how old I was, but my parents decided to grab a room (think it was a cancellation, don't remember) and let me stay in it. Heaven~

It was my step-dad's family reunion, I didn't know anyone, and this room was the best hiding place because it was outside their pre-booked block of rooms which were all in close proximity. So I wouldn't run into any of them on the way to the ice machine or pool. (was really hot and most of them stayed in the AC) Anyway, my point is either plan ahead or deal with the situation, but don't harass the staff over it.

Well, clearly they had extra beds stashed in a back closet, so why not clear out the extra beds and give them that room?

Yeah, they did eventually ask for those and I was happy to provide them.

how is the kid sleeping on the floor in blankets less of a fire hazard? is it because you can deny knowledge of it?

I'd guess it's because a rollaway would block access to the door/window/other way of exiting the room, while a person in a bundle of blankets will (naturally) remove themselves from the walkway when trying to get out themselves.

It all comes down to reasonable regulation. The fire department can have a reasonable expectation of being able to enforce a rule regarding the beds because they can tell after a fire if there was one there. They can enforce it by having the hotels account for which rooms they check the beds out to -- guests aren't likely to be toting around roll-aways on vacation. There is no way anyone can enforce a maximum blanket per room rule unless they make the hotels check every room, every night, and count blankets, because guests could just as easily bring in a dozen sleeping bags as ask for extra blankets. After a fire there'd also be little chance of picking out what blankets were on the floor in a trampled nest versus which ones were dragged off the bed in the rush to flee.

So could a mound of blankets cause as much of a fire hazard as a roll-away bed? Sure, but it's never going to make it to the fire regs.

just wondering it always interests me. i wounder if we should asked for a roll away at sakura con for the poor boy. he slept on the floor or the chair even after i offered to share the bed with him. i sleep to one side, like pillows on my other side no matter what for my back if i roll more on my side and can sleep like the dead after a long day. but he didnt want to share with me so i got a bed to myself, completely worthless if you ask me, i didnt need the the whole thing. though i can kind of understand, im pretty sure it was only full sized.

Sounds to me like they thought you'd just leave it outside the door, and they could take the elevator, then bring it down to their room..
