  • Did you ever say "Do you work here?" to someone?

I do, sometimes, have a brain fog and assume that person with lots of items in the cart = employee. At that point, it takes me a moment to realize that they are fellow customers.

Sometimes I hold back from saying it at all, and other times, I realize it just after asking and apologize profusely.

What about you? Did you ever say stuff like that?

I've asked that question before, but in my defense, it was a person wearing a red polo and tan pants at Target.
At the conclusion of an Irish wedding, the priest said "Everybody please hug the person who has made your life worth living. The bartender was nearly crushed to death.

I did it once, with a guy in a blue shirt and khakis who was putting away shoes at Walmart. Apparently, his wife just really liked trying on shoes. XD

Sometimes, I might approach a fellow customer with questions because the staff are nowhere to be seen. Maybe the store was short-staffed, but I was desperate and feeling lost. I would apologize to the customer and now, I look before I ask, to see if they are staff or not.

I was once in a clothes shop and accidentally asked another customer a question about where something was. In my defence, the uniform for the shop was "smart black blouse and skirt/trousers" (which she was wearing) and she had an armful of folded clothes hiding the customary location of the name badge. I got to "excuse me please, do you know..." before I trailed off and said "you don't work here, do you?" Cue profuse apologies and a blushing retreat.

I have asked from time to time. If they say no, I apologize and move on. If yes, I ask my question. And really I don't get offended if someone asks me if I work somewhere as long as they are polite about it and take no for an answer. We all have those days when our brains aren't functioning quite right.

When I was working at the cent store we didn't have uniforms, we only had name tags. At a store like that, its very understandable that someone would ask someone else if they worked there.

What I always found annoying was when I forgot to take my name tag off after work and would be shopping at a different store, people would just assume that I worked there and demand that I helped them.

Mom did that a month ago at a busy greenhouse in the area. (It's one of hte largest in the province I believe). Being the prime spring planting season, the place was busy but they had lots of employees around.

I was looking for something particular, and was waiting to try and flag someone down who didn't seem too busy. Mom tried to be helpful and of the people around us, she picked someone who admittedly had clothing slightly similar to the uniforms... but no Greenhouse branding on her shirt or anything like that.

The poor woman looked a bit shellshocked as mom described what we were looking for, before she (or I; I knew she didn't work there either) could finally interrupt and say that she didn't work there.

On top of that, there were easily a half dozen other ACTUAL employees around (granted most of them helping other customers); mom just picked the one person who didn't work there pretty much.

Mom was suitably mortified, and we did find another actual worker who tried to help. (I decided to get something else in the end however).
