  • Computer filled wired to the hilt Jeep get hacked

I was wondering how long it would take form someone to actually publish a story like this.

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/connec...ety/ar-AAdibe8

We all know how much computer stuff is in modern cars -- Wi-Fi connectivity, On-Star type systems, GPS, connectivity with smart phones, etc.

Apparently 2 security experts accessed/hacked the Jeep's central processing system. They turned up the radio, messed with the A/C, and then shut down transmission and brakes.

AND we want to have driverless cars out there with more connectivity.?????????

Hell, I am not overly thrilled by the 'drive by wire' cars [what is it, Mercedes that has that? No solid shaft on the steering system so you don't get flail chest if you neglect to use a safety belt.] The idea of so much under the control of shit that can regularly blue screen if it gets too warm or has power surges? Yup, I'll get right on that. NOT.

Connectivety isn't so much the problem as the coding in FCA's U•Connect. In this case, FCA screwed up. The long and short was that if you knew the vehicles IP address, then you could control it. Yeah, they were practicing security by obscurity. Obviously there'll be a software update. Hard to say ifn we'll see more of these, in the past the only way you could hack was via the OBD port in the car, and ifn you can get into the car... On*Star was (is?) hacker proof because of its older more primitive design, it predates on the connectivity stuff and was set up to be operator assist. Systems like U•Connect are the wave of the future though, so we'll see what happens.

        I'm not too terribly worried.

My car has a carb, a distributor, mechanical fuel pump and thermostatic choke.

        HACK THAT!

And as others have pointed out, this is going to get remedied pretty quick.

I may have a "slightly" modern car () 16 years old and yes it has a lot of electronic stuff (mostly a boatload of sensor stuff more than is really needed) BUT NO connectivity, U*connect, OnStar, WiFi, onboard HDD, Smart Phone/Bluetooth connectivity, etc.

Haven't any of these car designers watched the movie/pilot of the new (i.e. "Starbuck is a woman") Battlestar Galactica? It was released long enough ago that the current generation of cars wasn't on the drawing board yet.

Argabarga and Racket Man, count me in as another owner of a Mark 4 Viper. The door locks are completely immune to ANY "crack the code for the keyless entry" attack current or future (no power locks), and it's equipped with an anti-theft device that becomes more effective with each passing year (manual transmission).
