  • job application question

*trying to be vague here, because some of my opinions on this are more appropriate for Fratching*

I've long been interested in moving up a position in the library system, and applications are being accepted for being put on an "eligible-to-hire" list for circulation desk positions. However, for this job description, "ability speak Language X" is listed under "Preferred Qualifications", and as part of the application process, one has to rate (on a scale from 1-5) what your communication skills in Language X are.

So I guess my question is.......is it worth applying for the "eligible to hire" list even though I'm not fluent in "Language X"?

It can't hurt to try. The worst that should happen is that you wind up lower on the list of eligible candidates if speaking language X is a major consideration.

If you wanted to improve your chances, and can manage it, you might see about trying to learn the language. There are lots of self-teach programs around anymore, or try to find a class at a local school (community college, maybe even a local high school?).

Well, I'm already learning another language through an online college, so I think it might make my head explode if I tried to learn "Language X" as well. (I did take three years of it in high school, but I don't remember much of it)
