I take small business banking calls in my department, and I got one today who couldn't give me the correct number, didn't have a debit card, and didn't really know his ssn. Eventually he figured out that he'd been transposing two numbers on the account, so that turned out ok, and he was able to verify the account after that.

What was weird was after that - he had an overdrafted account, because of several transactions yesterday and 5 overdraft fees today. I also found out that he had gotten a printout of his transactions from one of the branches, so he could see what I saw.

He asked that I itemize the transactions that overdrew the account, so I started doing that. About 5 items in, he interrupted me and started complaining that all the amounts I was saying were the same ones he saw on his printout. I explained at that time that that was because both he and I were looking at his account, at the same transactions. That explanation did not help things though, for some reason. I asked him if he wanted me to continue the explanation, and he said that yes, he did. I then advised him that the transactions I would be telling him would be the same that he saw on his account print out, and if that would be ok. He said that no, that wouldn't be.

So now, I was completely baffled. What in the world could I tell him about the transactions if he didn't want them to match what was in his account? At that point, he said that he would just go into one of the branches and said that he would now have a terrible day because I didn't tell him what he wanted. . .

I'm still flabbergasted over this one.

He wanted you to tell him that all those overdrafted amounts were actually a different amount, which would make them errors. Presumably bank errors, so that he could go "Ah HA! I caught you! That's not what was supposed to have been withdrawn, so it's YOUR fault I overdrrafted my account! Now put the money back and give me some token to show how sorry you are and promise that you'll never ever do it again."

That's probably exactly what he wanted!

        Agree

I think you are right, why else complain that your bank sent the correct statements.

I've been in a similar situation when I still used [Bank of My Country] for my checking account.

I kept getting overdraft notices, despite my very careful bookkeeping telling me I shouldn't be. The bank could not explain where the discrepancies were, so I closed my account and went to what is now [Mike And Tango Bank], and haven't had any similar problems.

I hate the way banks post transactions which cause overdrafts. Because pending transactions never show on the statement for the day in question, it looks like the account was never overdrawn. It makes explaining the overdraft fees very frustrating for both us reps as well as the customers. It takes about a year for the phone agents to really understand it, because the training on it is minimal, and you have to figure it out on individual calls. I almost developed ptsd from those calls before I was promoted to the department I'm in now. I heard that, hopefully soon, the bank I work for is going to start posting in chronological order instead of largest to smallest. When they announced that, everyone in the call center cheered!

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Didn't like it when he realized his cunning plan wasn't that cunning after all and the rep wasn't falling for it.

I love my Chase account; I get a text alert the second my account goes into overdraft (not often, but it has happened once or twice) and, if I deposit money before the next business day via teller or cash-accepting ATM, I don't get any overdraft fees. Genius.
