  • All Together Now: Failure to Plan On Your Part...

Ok so today a guest comes to my desk, about half-frantic that her cab isn't here yet. I offer to call the cab company and see what's going on, and then she comes out with this gem: "I had them call 10 MINUTES AGO!"

Ok, first, it's 7:30am. Granted it's a Sunday, so the roads shouldn't really be too busy, but response time for a taxi in Denver is 20 minutes if you're really lucky. Since she had an accent, I was going to just assume she is from a city where cabs arrive faster than they do here. Still a brain burp, but an understandable mistake for a newbie traveler.

Then she tells me "Please get them here, our flight leaves at 8:30!" Needle Scratch. What?! It's 7:30am. You had a cab called at 7:20am for an 8:30 flight. Out of an airport that's 45 minutes away (on a GOOD day). Lady, you're missing your flight no matter what at this point. There's a reason the airport / airlines tell you to arrive 2 hours early for a domestic flight and 3 hours early for an international. It's because there's a thing called "Security" you have to deal with.

So, kids, say it with me now: failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.

It takes forever to get through security at that airport. Lady is a dumbass.

A cruel mercy yes, but at least they were honest about their soon to be missed flight. That's more than can be said for the assholes in this thread I posted a while back:

          Airport wait.

The wait time is so bad I find if I have a morning flight that it make sense to come the previous night (11-12 PM) and spend the night working on my computer. It also helps that airport WIFI tends to be very fast at night when there are so few people using it.

I just sleep on the plane while it flies.

To me, coming six hours before an international flight works fine for me.

If I'm following your information correctly these rocket scientists would be lucky to _get_ to the airport 15 minutes before the flight left the ground. Pre 9/11 this would have been cutting it far too close, post 9/11 there's no way they'd even get through TSA before the flight left.

How does anyone not know this anymore?

One time I was flying (domestic) and I felt the shuttle arrival was going to cut it too close, so I took an earlier one. Got to the airport at like 3 AM, for one of the early morning flights, something like 7 or 8 AM. It was really great, I'm not at all being sarcastic. The airport was deserted, security was a breeze, I sat and had a calm breakfast... I was traveling with a group and they came much later and were totally frazzled. By that time the traffic was heavy and the lines were long.

There have been plenty of times that I breezed through security at DIA in under 5 minutes. But those were at least 3 hours before my flight, during the week, and the simple fact that I wasn't in a hurry meant that things were moving faster.

Yeah, DIA is a madhouse even under the best of circumstances.

But at least there will be plenty of stuff for her to see and do while she waits for the next flight.

My philosophy is, "It's better to be an hour early than five minutes late", whether it's catching a particular bus, plane or train, or just seeing a movie. Due to the train schedules, I often have to take the earlier train that means I'll have ninety minutes or more to kill before my movie, but I suck it up, because that's better than missing ten or more minutes of the movie by taking the later train (I'm very anal about not missing part of the movie, even if it's just a sliver at the very beginning, and I always sit through the credits to the very end). I always have a book with me to pass the time, or else I go shopping, or whatever. Anyone who expects to arrive PRECISELY when their movie starts, or their mode of transportation departs, is a fool for not planning ahead and factoring in potential delays, traffic, what have you.

I can't believe how many people leave when the credits roll. My friend and I are often the only people in the seats when the little extras roll out at the end of the movie.

Worse we saw Ant-Man and it had a little add-on before the credits ended. Larry wanted to leave but I insisted we stay to end only have have a second extra insert about the Winter Soldier to come up at the very end of the credits.

Aside from Larry and I there were only two other people in the theater at the very end. The few who had stayed thru the credits left at the first insert that showed The Wasp costume. Silly people.

It seems that the taxi drivers are just as rude as the guests. They are either too late or too early. When they're too early, they call forever, saying "when iz he comin ouwt?" When they're too late, I get harassed by the guest. I wish they'd call them themselves, the number's in the room and all! Sheesh...

To me, I don't even care if there's a Credit Cookie at the end...I've always insisted on watching a movie's credits to the end, and tell that to whoever I go to the movies with ("I'll catch up to you in the lobby" as they shuffle out). A movie doesn't feel "complete" to me unless I watch the credits. Plus, sometimes there's nice music to listen to.
