  • Tenants don't need to go home

I have two coworkers who live in the same apartment complex. It's a secured building that's so secure, lately they haven't been able to go home!

First suck came during a recent power outage. The power locks apparently did not have any sort of battery back-up, so everyone was locked outside in the stormy weather. That sucked, but at least you can chalk it up to "shit happens".

The second suck was just poor management. The doors were locked with a keypad and you had to put in the passcode. Management decided to change to RFID keys...without giving any of the tenants keys. Cue angry tenants waiting outside for someone to come unlock them! Yes, way to have a smooth transition during a lock change!

Similar thing happened to me. Just moved, my key fob doesn't work on the door to the building I now live in, or to the gate. I can get in the back door, which is good so Hubby doesn't have to let me in all the time, but I wonder what's the point of a gated complex if the back door opens right to the street.

A gated community or building is more for the sense of safety than actual safety.

The gated community where my parents part timed as guards, the auto opening back gate would break. So would the pin pad for the not so auto gate. The power would go out and neither would work. If that happened, you had to go to the front gate to get in. The guard would check your pass (which you needed to display in the window) and would wave you through, if the power was out. Their bar could be manually lifted out of the way.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.
