Working my usual overnight. P and I are busting our asses, as is everyone else because night crew is down two guys (we're not supposed to help with stock, but I sometimes do; it keeps my brain from melting). G has been fielding calls from Red Checkmark asking about a "power outage" (nothing abnormal going on). Checkmark doesn't have a work order and there's nothing on the night crew paperwork about a tech visit, so G tells whoever is on the other end to call our IT dept and have IT call the store to verify...so Checkmark keeps calling the store.
At about 4AM, there's very insistent banging on the doors. G is pretty grumpy at this point (the calls have wasted at least an hour for him), and goes to see who it is. It's apparently a Checkmark contractor. No work order, no visible ID, nobody was told they were coming. Any non-company employees doing work overnight must arrive before closing to check in with a manager and so an escort can be arranged if they need office or computer access. I was up front sorting the rest of the tags so heard at least G's side of the conversation.
G: "Nobody told me you were coming. I need to see an ID and work order."
G: "I realize that, but we have policies too. I can't just let someone in at night without a manager present and any visitors doing work need to have and show ID. It's a security concern, I'm sure you guys have the same policies."
G: "I get it, but how would you like it if someone came to your door at 4AM saying they had to check your internet? That's what this looks like to me. It's my ass on the line if anyone gets let in without verification. My boss didn't tell me anyone was coming. You guys have to come before closing to check in with a manager, your boss should know this. No, I'm not a manager, I'm the night crew chief. Come back in an hour when my boss will be here."
He then tries to tailgate in when the bakery crew shows up. Um, NO. Denied!
Big boss shows up, and...our debit system (and apparently whole network again, there was a whole pile of tags we couldn't put up because we couldn't check prices) is down. So there was something wrong...went undetected for Checkmark's refusal to provide the proper verification when they first called. SM wasn't pleased when G told him about the tech visit in the middle of the night (I don't know what he was more pissed about; the random visit or system being down again).
I did have to back G up when the tech tried to claim he was refused entry (and was telling a different story than what I overheard).
