  • It's the nature of the business!

This is the excuse the suits use whenever they mess everything up at work and we have to suffer for it. I'm tired of it. Yes I get we are a seafood processing facility, and as such a lot of our work depends on A) what was caught the previous day and B) what is ordered for the next few days.

It's not nearly as unpredictable as they are making it sound. There are tons of people out on boats right now catching these fish. There are millions of pounds a day being hauled out of the water. And restaurants serve these things like crazy. So this "nature of the business" crap doesn't hold water. Unless you're telling me that A) every fisherman died a week ago and B) every restaurant, grocery store and meat market on the planet closed.

It's frustrating. Going into work every day I have huge anxiety because I have no fricken clue what it's gonna be like. We might get out of there at noon. We might be there until midnight! It's happened before. And 99% of it is avoidable if they'd just pull their heads out of their butts and pay attention once in a while. And also, if the supervisors would stop acting like they are descended from royal blood lol....

Annnnnnd I guess that's that. It was another one of those days where I kinda knew we were working today, but no one important told me. I didn't even get second or third hand knowledge. Something like "Carl told me to tell you we're working saturday."

So they knew wednesday. Friday night around 5:30 they decide to officially spring it on me. They claim I should've known. Well, yeah they got me there, but it's not my job to "should know". It's not my job to eavesdrop in the locker room and see if there's work. It's not my job to look around the factory and guess. It's not my job to even pull the supervisor aside and ask. There are multiple ways they could let us know. No excuse for this BS.

So I told the boss no, I need more notice. He said either I come in or get written up. So I just walked out. On the upside, I've got a pretty good record there, with the only blemishes being some attendance issues, half of which are their fault. Plus the HR lady likes me. So maybe they'll just give me a slap on the wrist and transfer me to a different department. Carl is such a douche.

Or not. I always wanted to be a lawyer. Is 35 too late to go to college?

If worse comes to worst and you end up needing to look for a new job because of the manager's aggressive stupidity being mangled and turned against you somehow (start updating your resume now, just in case), have a word with the Labor Department. It may be that your local laws require proper notification about such things. Document everything, in writing, with dates and times, in the meantime.

No, as long as you're capable, you're golden.

Heck, based off of your command of the English language, you're ahead of the game in comparison to the students I help.

(And I'm not referring to the ESL students. XD)

I have a few classmates in their 40's right now, and back during my first time around in college I had a classmate in her 70's.

I work in software, and this happens with us, too.

Sometimes I get the feeling management is more interested in putting a band-aid on a problem rather than actually fixing the problem. They also like to play the, "It's the nature of the business" card. Because we're in an "agile" environment.

I call BS on that. They want us to be proactive, but seem to be extremely reactive sometimes.

It is said (by me) in my family that if you stop learning, you might as well be dead. So, no 35 is not too old for college.

Well i understand lots of older people go to college, but it usually seems.to be for personal satisfaction rather than a career. Who the heck wants to hire a 45 year old lawyer who has zero experience?

Someone who wants to hire a any-year old lawyer with zero experience.

At worst, someone with a basic understanding of economics would offer you slightly less pay, and presumably profit from hiring someone just as qualified, for less than the market would normally say they're worth. All while you're gaining that valuable experience.

Hell, being older could be a valuable selling point, Maturity>Youth.

In lawyers, the older you look, the more of an asset it is, based on the jury duties I managed to luck out of. It implies enough experience in both life and law that you'd be able to pull a few tricks to get a jury/judge to side with your client.

In some fields, age won't matter one way or another. Studio art comes to mind, because age really doesn't matter in art. What matters is if you can put up with the BS of having to prove why your work is art in the first place.
