  • Give Me Money!

So, I'm presently a Lead (ie, supervisor) at Major Retail Store. Most of the time it's a good job; my crew is awesome, and the other Leads and Managers know how to have a good time.

Today Merchandising Lead "D" and I did not have a good time with the most entitled sucktomer I have ever encountered.

Entitlement Whore, her bitchy EW husband, and their totally silent daughter came in to return a certain brand of shirt (we'll call it Brand X). Their receipt clearly stated that they purchased two Brand X shirts; one for $24 and one for $0, because we were having a BOGO on these particular shirts.

EW and EWH were returning only one shirt, so of course the computer was giving a refund of exactly $0. Apparently this was illogical to the EW pair, who spent ten minutes insisting to me that they had paid for both shirts despite the zero dollar amount on the receipt they handed to me. I finally told them they could exchange the shirt, but they would not get any type of refund, because you can't refund something that was never paid for in the first place. After some grumbling they agreed to go pick something else.

Is the story over? Of course not. Did they go pick out another Brand X shirt for an even exchange? Ha ha ha ha! No.

No, they picked out a baby monitor. At this point, since they were refusing to take my "no" for an answer, I had to enlist the help of Awesome Merchandising Lead D, who looked at me like I was insane when I explained what the EWs were trying to do. In fact (we were away from the EWs at this point), the first words out of D's mouth were, "Are you fucking kidding me?"

Long story short, D spent another ten minutes trying to tell them that no, they didn't pay anything for the free shirt, so no, they cannot get a credit toward the baby monitor. EW the Wife kept shrieking that there were no BOGO signs up when she purchased the shirts, and all attempts to point out that this was irrelevant (translation: your receipt says $0, you fucking moron) were met with even louder shrieks demanding the Store Manager.

D and I did not call Store Manager over. Believe me when I say that this was a mercy for the idiotic EW. There is a reason Store Manager is commonly referred to as "the Dragon," and she does not suffer fools lightly. EW has no idea how lucky she was.

End result? After about twenty minutes we finally managed to convince the EWs that we were not going to just start pulling money out of the registers and flinging it at them with joyous abandon. EW the Wife stomped out huffing that she was going to file a complaint about our "bad service", so D gave Store Manager a heads up just in case.

The Dragon's response? "It's not your fault they aren't smart enough to take no for an answer."

Well, ain't that special. They discovered they got a shirt for free and wanted to return the one they 'paid' for - and you foiled their plans, you evil person, you!

I love your store manager! It's nice to see one with a backbone of steel instead of spaghetti!

The Dragon is a formidable woman and an expert at customer service. If a customer has a legitimate problem she will do absolutely everything she can to fix it, but God help you if you try to pull some bullshit maneuver like these idiots did. She does not tolerate stupidity.

Back in the mid-1990's when I worked as a cashier at a grocery store a customer tried to use a coupon on buy one get one free product. The coupon was for the product that was free.

I had to call a manager over to help her.

He did not take her coupon.

I guess you could make a case for a refund of $12 but in order to get that sort of concession she'd have to not be a psycho.

Customer logic: buy one, get one free. Try to return the one you paid for. Used to get this all the time at the hobby shop.

This is kind of what I was thinking. I used to shop at the late lamented Fashion Bug and when they had a BOGO, they rang it up as one item for half of the price, other item for half of the price. But this is probably not a hard and fast rule for every store, and it sounds like these morons were just trying to get free money, period.

This does sometimes work if, for example, the BOGO is a store offer and the coupon is a manufacturers coupon. In this case, the coupon would go toward the item that was NOT free. Of course this only works if both item are identical which is NOT always the case in a BOGO.

A very long time ago, when computers were run by dinosaurs......
I had a catalog from which I ordered 3 big fat computer books. The company was having a sale where I buy 2 books and get the 3rd book for free. Unfortunately, when my package arrived, it was only one book - they had run out of the other 2 books, so they sent me the free one - and it was FREE! All I paid were a couple dollars for shipping. You could have knocked me over with a feather.
Unfortunately, that company is long gone, but I still remember them fondly. Not enough to remember their name, but fondly nonetheless.

I get this all of the time; when a customer uses their old device as a trade-in, the resulting amount of money (anywhere from $5 to over $200) can be used towards their new device, cases, screen protectors, etc. However, they have to use the credit in-store, and there are no cash refunds-you use it or lose it.

You can see where this is going...

At least once a week, I have a customer who thinks that, despite the fact that I told them clearly that they cannot get cash back from their trade-in, they come back in to return the accessories and think that they'll get cash back.

Nope. You can exchange that case for a different color or style, sure. Don't want a bluetooth speaker? You can definitely pick a battery booster and a selfie stick, instead! Return the device? Not a chance.
