  • You owe me!

Tonight when I was bringing change to my cashier, a little old lady stepped up to the counter and said "Is your manager here?"

I said "I'm the manager on duty. How can I help you?" She says: "Oh no, you have customers, I'll just wait over here." So I come around from behind the counter and ask how I can help. And so it begins ....

SC: "2 or 3 weeks ago I got my medicine at the pharmacy. I gave 'that man' a check for my medicine. My medicine was $12 (something, I don't remember what she said). But the check was for $300."

Okay, my Spidey sense is tingling.

SC: "So 'that man' kept punching in the .... what is it called? (I said, register?) Yes, register. He kept punching in $12 (whatever it was) and I got my medicine and 'that man' gave me the check back, but it was marked VOID"

SC: "I sent the 'destroyed' check (yes she said this!) to the people who send me the check. They were FURIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They said that you owe me $287 in change!!!!!!!"

Me: Well do you have your receipt? Maybe we can straighten this out for you.
SC: "No I sent it to those people. But you can check your records!"
Me: Okay what day was it?
    SC: "Friday"

<record scratch> Huh???? Ma'am what DATE was it? "2 or 3 weeks ago, check your records!!!!"

So I realize I am not going to give her this money and I tell her I have to pass this on to the store manager, who is not here right now, but will be back on Monday. I take her name and number, and AT THAT POINT, I realize she is one of the resident crazies that afflicts our pharmacy. It's so bad, that no one in the pharmacy wants to even call her to tell her that her medicine is ready. But I digress.

I go back to the pharmacy to get their side of the story. The pharmacist knows exactly who she is and exactly when she came in for her medicine. He tells me that she did indeed have a $300 check, but we refused to cash it and she went away. Then she came back with $15 cash and paid for her medicine. She got her medicine, never said a word about any money owed, and left.

So let's recap, shall we???? I got some medicine, but I don't remember when it was and I don't have the receipt, but I KNOW you owe me $287!!! Ummmmm NO

Not only is she crazy, but she can't do simple arithmetic. $300 less $12 is $288, not $287. If what she was saying was true, she was cheating herself out of $1.

      Yeah...

She just expected you to give her $288 without producing her receipt as proof.

      Not going to work.

Wait, what? I haven't heard of a store that allows you to pay with a check greater than the amount since the '80s. She needed to cash that check and then pay for her meds. It sounds like she needs them.

No chance of banning her with the very real excuse of attempted fraud?
