  • Discrimination Anyone?

    *sigh*

This is from a few years ago, before I got married. Something reminded me of this recently so I thought I'd share.

I had just gotten engaged. We bought my engagement ring somewhere other than a jewelry store. I wanted a white gold wedding ring to match the engagement ring.

One of our first stops was at Sears. We go to the jewelry counter.

We were not dressed scruffy. We were very polite, smiling, happy. Not that that lasted long.

There were two ladies working at the counter. We found out later that the one who helped us was the manager.

From the beginning, it was odd. She stated that she could only bring out one ring at a time. Every time she brought one out, she called security on the walky talky. Every freaking time.

That was bad enough. I felt like I was being treated as a thief. I was giving her the benefit of the doubt though... Maybe it was store policy? That was until what I saw next.

There was a young lady who came up to the counter a few minutes after we did. The lady who was helping her treated her ENTIRELY different.

She brought out 5 or 6 at a time. She didn't call security ONCE.

I felt like such a loser then. I don't know what the deal was.

For what it was worth... My (now) husband and I are white. The lady helping us was black. The other customer was Middle Eastern. I don't remember what the other sales clerk was.

    I just don't get it...

the only legit reason I can really think of is that the other customer was a repeat custommer, and therefor was excempt from some of the more restrictive policies. Much like banks willl tend to waive ddeposit holds foor established customers.
    Otherwise I have no clue.

Calling security seems a bit over the top. I agree this was quite odd behavior and I would have gone somewhere else...

        Could have been passive-aggressive behavior.

Were the other people who came in behind you white, as well? Were they dressed more "up" than you?

All these things could be a factor. Could be passive-aggression, could be training. I don't know.

Maybe they've had problems with thieves, so they "profile".

        I honestly don't know.

That's what I was thinking too. The clerk was probably just being a jerk and decided to mess with someone.

I think the "one at a time" is store policy (used to work at sears) but calling security was a bit over the top. What she should have done, if she was worried, was call the LP office out of your hearing and ask them to keep an eye on the monitors in that section. Not that she should have been worried about you, but you get my meaning. No idea why the other lady was shown six at a time. That is defiantly not policy for anything that is valuable enough to have to be locked behind glass.

Maybe the clerk just broke up with her boyfriend and you're there all happy and engaged... I have a tendency to point things out, so I would have gotten thrown out after saying "oh, actually, can we wait for her? *other clerk* She seems to have a different policy."

You were presumably going for high-end rings -- could the other lady have been shopping costume jewelry or suchlike?
