  • Wherein a bluff is called, but cops are not.

This happened earlier in my shift. I think it's just about wrapped up.

SC comes to pay for another night of their room. Why they didn't do it earlier, I don't know, and really they should have. But I digress. The room is not on her name, just staying with the same group.

A few minutes later she calls down
SC: I'm being kicked out of the room. I'm gonna come down and get my money back.
Me: OK, but the room still needs to be paid for.

Just after she hung up, another person from the same room calls. And tells me not to return any money because it's theirs, and she only used the money to settle the room. SC comes down and I inform her of this. She threatens to call the cops. I agree with her that it would be the best course of action.

She yells at me some more tells me to give back her money. Demands to talk to a supervisor. I disincline to acquiesce to the request. SC walks away.

She wanders back into the lobby and is on her phone.
SC: Yes, I need an officer at Hotel at Street and Avenue

She gets off the phone and yells at me some more more emphatic that it was her money out of her pocket. And that I'm stealing, and how I'm going down so I better give her back her money. I only suggest we wait until the officer to get her so he can help us sort this out.

She goes back to the room. Both her and the other guests in the room come back down and say the situation's taken care of.

And the cops still haven't arrived.

Kinda makes me wonder who kicked her out, and why (if she was, indeed, kicked out). Was it hotel staff or someone staying in the room? How many were in the group? Were they all staying in the same room?

There's a scam afoot somewhere, but I can't quite place the scammer
That could explain the police delay
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

She was being kicked out by the other occupants of the room, not by hotel staff itself.

That's easy. She didn't really call anybody, just pretended to talk into her phone.

That's what I was thinking, also.

I was thinking that was part of he bluff. Except at the time I believed it to be genuine. She even gave thewwrong cross streets to the "dispatcher" and I quietly corrected her. I WANTED the cops to show up!

Nothing deflates a pompous SC like not caring they're threatening to call the cops.

Lines I've used in response to said threat:

                  - Want the non-emergency number? They hate it when you use 911 for this stuff

                  - Call whoever you want, it's a free country

                  - I'll be over here, the response time is probably going to be 15 - 20 minutes, it's longer on football weekends

                  - You gave the wrong address, it's 508, not 500, tell them we're in the rear, they know where it is.

They just can't believe that I don't care, and they can't believe the cops don't care either.
                  - They say nothing good happens at 2AM, they're right, I happen at 2AM.

It was actually pretty amusing how quickly the situation deescalated when I showed how eager I was for the cops to arrive. After she ended her "phone call" she threatened me some more about how I'm going to be in so much trouble and that I'd better refund the money. I told her that we should just wait for the officer to get here and he can help us take care of the situation then.

It's not that I didn't care if the cops showed up, because I did. Very much. It's just that she hated I showed anticipation rather than fear.

You were absolutely in the right to want the cops to show up. I'd want them to in such a situation as well!

Technically, even if it had been her money, I think it belonged to the hotel now. She'd requested a service, paid for it, you provided it. Even if she no longer wanted the service, the transaction was OVER.

But IANALawyer. So yeah: cop time. Or lawyer time. Or small claims court, really. Or she can discuss reimbursement with her 'friends'.

                        3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
