So I was in the mall today getting rid of some movies at FYE and when the cashier gave me the money she gave me a hundred dollar bill, after that I went to Boscov's to get some boxes (because I didn't get them last week) but when I was at the register with the boxes the lady called over a manager. The money I was given was fake, I told them where I got it from and said I was gonna go back over there and either get real money or my movies back. I wasn't even halfway through the mall when a cop stopped me and wanted to know if I was the girl with the fake money, I told him how I ended up with it and what I planned to do. He walked back to FYE with me and talked to the cashier, she seemed pissed that I came back but I got real money this time. It just annoys me that I got fake money in the first place, hell when my company still existed we checked money all the time. Hundreds and fifties we ALWAYS checked, twenties sometimes but how the fuck can you not check a big bill when you get it?

Colors- look at the SN it shifts 1/2 way so does the font and the "DE" does not line up with the number
The thread is visible even on the desk
It's not clear but it looks like he has Downs syndrome in the watermark.
The ink did not color shift
"United States of America" was embossed so hard it let a relief on the backside.
1 more big thing I noticed but no one else does with the serial #

If the person in the watermark doesn't match the person on the bill, then it's a bleached bill.

This was demonstrated to us by the LP lady some time ago. Someone took a hundy which had Ben Franklin's face on it, but Alexander Hamilton's face was in the watermark.

There was a small store here locally that, unfortunately, hired a gal with some shady friends as a clerk. Customer goes through line and gets back some tens and twenties that feel wrong in her change. She calls the clerk on it, and clerk goes into total denial that anything is wrong with the money. Customer goes into the large grocery store next door, walks up to the courtesy booth and asks them to check the bills. Cops are called on behalf of customer, and they pay a visit to the small store to speak with the owner. Come to find out, clerk had been slipping all the tens and twenties out of the drawer all day and replacing them with fakes. IE, laundering through the store. Store video was pulled and clerk was arrested.

* On a side note, there are people on the little e logo site selling "movie money". Where it should say "United States of America", it says "Motion Picture Use Only". Otherwise they are near perfect fakes. A store in our state got hit with some a few weeks ago. A reporter showed one of the bills to people on the street and only 1 out of 4 caught the mistake.

I wonder if she knew full well the bill was fake and that's why she was pissed about it? I've worked at places where the boss has told the cashiers to slip bills they know to be fake into the change they give customers so that the store doesn't have to take a loss on it when the money is deposited. I would refuse to do it and clear any questionable bills out of my register by tucking them into the first deposit bag I would use, because invariably there would be a couple of fake bills in my float for the day -_-

Me and my mom thought the same thing, before A & P went under Anthony and Nina would fire anyone that wouldn't report fake money and/or pass it off to a customer. To them that's the same as if not worse than stealing, and I'd have to agree.

It is, but most people are more focused on the water marks and such and just don't pay attention to that part.

Someone was dropping these in the hallways around a convention that I was working at. Nobody tried to use them as far as I know, but the hotel manager and the con cash office were PISSED.

My stepdad once drew £200 out of the bank's cashpoint, of which £80 was in fake cash. If he hadn't used some of the fakes in the shop across the road he might not have known until it was too late. Thankfully the shopkeeper let him have them back (they were still wrapped in the cashpoint receipt!) and he went back over the road and made the bank give him real money.

Ahhh counterfeit monies. My area has been hit recently and we've been told to check all $20's $50's and $100's with the counterfeit pen. Only one problem... it wasn't until recently we learned that if the counterfeit pen has been used for anything other than marking money...it'll mark fake money as real. So we had to toss all the counterfeit pens we had and get new ones. When my GM told me that tidbit I looked at her and went "So I take it nobody knows the additional trick of running your thumbnail or fingernail down the president's jacket to check the grooves? If you can feel the grooves it's real, if you can't it's fake.."

This makes no sense to me, because fake notes are by definition not money, so checking one would cause the pen to be useless from then on?

It is probably one of those things that is a matter of degrees: one swipe on a fake bill is a small effect, but writing out a paragraph or five note to a coworker might contaminate the pen point enough to make it useless.

Or maybe the real problem is using it to write on thermal receipt paper, but they don't want to admit that specifically, for fear of someone doing it deliberately?

I learned multiple tells for money other than the counterfeit pen anyway, because 1. our store never seemed to actually have the pens around when you needed them, and 2. if the counterfeit is printed on a "washed" $1, then it'll come up as legit anyway with the pen. So I learned to check watermarks, color-change ink, look for that plastic strip, etc.
