  • I finally quit

Not the best financial decision, not by a long shot. And it sucks because if I could've held on for one more onth, I'd be eligible for unemployment this winter during the layoff. That being said, I was so stressed out and miserable at this place I was throwing up most mornings at the thought of going in there.

So it can't be totally wrong can it?

I'm sorry the job was so nasty it was making you sick. Work should not have to be that way, and I don't know why so many companies make it that way.

You have to do what is best for you. I assure you, you're not the only one here who's had to make an emergency exit from a hellish job. If it's a choice between your finances and your health/sanity, always choose health and sanity.

I hope something better comes along, and very soon. You might want to try a temp agency to fill in the gaps.

Agreed with XC: your health first. Don't let a job put you in the hospital.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

One trick that helps when taking a written test is to remember that the first thing being tested is your communications skills. It doesn't matter how good your logic or math skills are if you misunderstood the question. I've lost track of the number of times I've seen or heard of someone answering a completely different question than the one that was asked, just because the guy or gal answering it would have used the same words to ask a different question than the one that they were actually asked.

It is important because no one wants to hire someone that they have to fight with just to make themselves understood by.

i mean those "agree" or "disagree" multiple choice tests. usually a range like strongly disagree as wel.

statements like "i am never late for work."

how do u answer that? obviously u say agree. i am never late for work. but mayne the test scorer is going to assume anyone who answers agree is lying and who wants a liar? or maybe they want to know that you are smart enough to lie in the right situation.

Those personality tests are so worthless. They don't actually help find better workers. "I am very loyal." You can answer yes but what does it matter? They will fire you if they want. You will leave if you want. I hate that anyone believes those tests help.

I absolutely HATED those "personality" test. I took SOOOOO many of them when applying for jobs in the IT field years ago.

The thing is though is that in college I took several Psychology classes and they all covered these type of "intelligence and personality" test ---- meaning how they were set up, how they were worded (same question just worded differently) and how they were "scored" and what that "score" was supposed to mean.

                Good knowledge to have

Apply online (shows you can follow directions) but mail (NOT email) your resume and cover letter directly to the person in charge of hiring. Also it helps if you can keyword-optimize your resume to the job you're applying for. When I left Jeers I applied to two hotels, and got hired for the first one. I attribute getting called for an interview to my use of keywords, and getting hired to knowing how to interview well. PM me if anyone needs any tips.

I feel those stupid personality tests are also designed to weed out the introverts. As if introverts aren't already disadvantaged enough as far as finding jobs. Employers always want the bubbly personalities even if they aren't as adequate at doing the actual work.

Well this week hopefully I'll be working for this "staffing agency". Sounds fun. I don't have much experience in this area, so I don't know how much it will suck lol. At least I FINALLY have my own vehicle to take to work. It is so friggin depressing to have nowhere to sit by myself and reflect.

Back in 2011, I quit my job of four years. Let's just say it wasn't pretty. I eventually got a job working at a local amusement park. The pay was lousy but it did do wonders in rebuilding my confidence. Fast forward to 2012. I got hired as a dishwasher on a train in Alaska. My intentions was to work there one season and hopefully find a permanent job in Texas when I got back. That didn't happen. The following season I got hired on as a cook on a different train. This summer will be my fourth season on that train.

Winters were always a problem. It seems no one wants to hire you if they think you're going to leave come summer. Last winter I got a job at a ski resort in Montana. This winter, I got hired back and even got a promotion.

For the foreseeable future, it looks I will be spending my winters in Montana and my summers in Alaska. While this isn't where I thought I would be at over 40, I wouldn't trade my life for anything.

I guess what I'm trying to say, is that it's possible to bounce back from quitting a job. So, don't give up hope.

Thanks for the support y'all! In the meantime, brand new hurdle: They seem ready to employ me at the staffing center, and I've lost all my ID paperwork. Mainly SS card and Birth Certificate. I can get my BC fairly easily, but it'll take about ten days. Way to make a first impression huh? I hope they're not all sitting there thinking "What an unprepared, dumb loser he is!"

Do you have a passport? That will cover your ID requirements. Voter registration and drivers license will also work. In any case you shouldn't need both your social security card and birth certificate. Of the two, the card will be the easiest to replace as long as you have your license or state ID.

And no, they won't think you're dumb. Social Security cards are small, flimsy, easy to lose pieces of paper.

I think for the SS card you probably need the birth certificate but maybe only your driver's license. Then you have to go torture yourself and stand in line at your local office.
