  • I thought day and night were determined by the relative position of the earth and sun

    Silly me.

Every hotel night clerk knows who they are. They're the ones that check in just past midnight thinking that just because the date rolled over that they should get a room until the next calendar date.

Had a guest check in tonight. (Sunday night/Monday morning) He asked about the checkout policy and I told him. He said he should get the room until Tuesday morning. I told him it was still Sunday Night.

Usually I don't have a very good answer for this. Tonight my inner smartass came out.
SC: I don't understand. How is it still Sunday night?
Me: (looking out the window) It's still dark out. The sun hasn't come out yet. Therefore it's still night.
To right the countless wrongs of our days... We shine this light of true redemption, that this place may become as paradise...Oh, what a wonderful world such would be...

When this would happen to me, I would always ask them if we expected everyone to get up and check out at midnight.

If they want to be smartasses, technically, they no longer have a room, because he checked in on Monday, instead of Sunday. So Technically, they're gonna have to make a new reservation and hope that there is an open one

Eh, you could argue if it's after 12AM then it is, indeed, Monday Morning. Just very early Monday Morning.

I know what you're getting at. It prevents people from "gaming" the system. I suppose I'm nit-picking a little, but 12:01 AM Monday is not "Sunday Night".

When I worked at the Hotel Motel we would cut them a break once in a while if they were nice about it. Like, if it was 4am when checked in because they got stuck in a blizzard or something, we might give them a deeply discounted rate for Sunday and then back to normal price for Monday. The reasoning was that it was highly unlikely that the room would be sold otherwise at that point. They would rather lose 50% on the room than lose 100% if the customer leaves.

Where I work 2am is the cut off for days. Though I do think if someone comes in later they just get "pushed back" to the day they reservation was for.

Makes sense. Not something you can always do, but nice for the customer (discounted room and somewhere to warm up) and for the hotel (they at least make some money instead of none).

The answer I always gave people was that as far as the billing system was concerned, a night starts at check in time and ends at check out time and a day is something that doesn't exist in its vocabulary.
