  • I love my GM

Last night we got hit with a blizzard along with high wind and gusts. The first couple of hours were alright because in my area storms like this are somewhat the norm (without the high winds). Most of us hard core vet drivers have learned to just go with the flow, drive VERY conservatively, be VERY aware of the roads (thankfully most ordinary people chose to stay off the roads after work), and just plod our way through. Most of the time that formula works. Not last night however.

Around 7 or 8pm everything starts to go to hell. Visibility is less than a block, the snow is blowing and drifting in several feet high drifts. Since this is "just the beginning of the storm the townships are NOT plowing just yet (not even the main roads). No one else ie. businesses, home, etc. have shoveled or plowed. Around 8ish or so I express to the GM my concern about the condition of the roads and driveability. TO my GM's credit they agree with me and told me they had already contacted the area manager in anticipation of either shrinking our delivery area or shutting down delivery altogether. I think to myself "YEAH right just like every other time this has been tried, it will get shot down. The company wants its $$$$$'s.".

Around 9pm I took a delivery to a hotel and got stuck in a 3 food drift in their driveway. I called the GM and told them when I got unstuck I was DONE driving for the night because the roads were nearly impassable due to the blowing and drifting snow. They inform me that the other 3 drivers had also gotten stuck right around the same time and that they were shutting down deliver with the area managers permission (I do know that at least one other of our stores also shut down delivery around the same time. Ironiclly one of our driver got stuck in our own driveway.

I get unstuck, make my delivery to a surprisingly grateful and generous hotel guest and carefully make my way back to the store. Took me an hour to make a normally 20 minute delivery. The GM called all the remaining deliveries and offered them free carryout as they had NO drivers to delivery food. A few brave souls embraced the weather and got their free orders.

The GM told me she told the area manager that one of her really hard core drivers (me) had said NO to more deliveries. AM said OK NO problem and to also shut off the internet connection to prevent any other orders from coming in.

We DID get a few calls that were the usual "What you guy worried about the blizzard for??? Come one I want delivery!!!!!" Sorry but when even experienced vet delivery drivers do NOT want to ride on the roads NO WAY are you getting delivery. Funnily NO one got stupid and made the "WELL I WILL give you a BIG BIG tip" line.

This is only the second time in 11 years (that I know of) that my store has shut down delivery VERY early because of the weather so YEAH to my GM.

Wow one with sense. That's something you don't see everyday.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Would have been interesting to see the breakdown on this:

      - "No thanks, I'm not going out in this storm" - and how many of them would complain to corporate and get coupons for loads of free stuff?

      - Takes him up on the offer, and gets stuck on the way there.

      - Takes him up on the offer, and gets stuck on the way home.

      - Takes him up on the offer, and gets home with their free pizza.

      - Takes him up on the offer, and arrives in an "unconventional" vehicle (snowmobile, dogsled, etc.).
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

I was stranded for a bit at a restaurant in a shopping center in my town when I saw a car from Dice Pizza driving around. I was bewildered that a) delivery was not cancelled by management and b) people were ordering delivery knowing there was a blizzard going on.

FL Might I remind you of what message board you and I are posting on?????

Especially your option B ---- I have always said 2 raindrops or 2 snowflakes and the phones/internet LIGHT UP and last night was NO exception. I still do not understand the logic especially when this particular storm has been predicted for at least a week now. Plenty of time to stock up food and suppl.......... OOOOPPPPPP I also have to remember where I am posting.

HMMMM Plenty of food in the house check
supplies a little light just after the holidays, check
SNOWMAGEDON ++++++ PPPPPIIIIIZZZZZZZZZZZZAAAAAAAAA the hell with all that "other" stuff we have in the house.

and you have to remember those pizza companies really do NOT care about their drivers all they want is the $$$$'s that snow business brings in.

I once ordered during a storm but it was NOT a blizzard. I know from blizzards, baby! This was just thick snow, winds were nothing much, driving was okay but people were being careful. I gave the guy a good tip too. In an actual blizzard I wouldn't order delivery. I've been out in that kind of weather and it totally sucks, not worth it.

Wow, management actually decided to close down during a storm? Clone them, please, or at least clone the part where they'd do things like that.

About two years ago my area had a rather nasty ice storm, it was so bad that even the SM of Random Craft Store told us truck people to just unload said truck, keep the crap in the back, and go home. Unfortunately the management at the Warehouse told all of us that we have one of three options: use up vacation time, come in, or get wrote up as a NCNS. Yea, the SM there wouldn't close unless he was told by police to close, which was what I expected more from Random Craft Store.

I showed up for my normal shifts, nearly fell numerous times outside, and pretty much stared at my co-workers for those couple of days. The store lost money during that time, mostly just by being open and paying everyone to stand around.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

Ironically enough, our walk-in/pick-up business back at DaddyJim's Pizza went waaay up during bad rainstorms.

I have one of those rare "intelligent customer in the storm" stories, too During a bad rainstorm -- so bad that water was coming in through the front door and we were about to shut the whole store down, we got a delivery call. We informed the guy that we were having to shut down because of flooding. He was (politely) skeptical, and mentioned that he lived on nearby street. We told him to go take a quick look out of his front door, and that we would wait for him to do so. He said OK. We knew, from experience, that his street would have flooded long before ours. He came back to the phone 30 seconds later, said "Never mind" with a haunted tone to his voice, and calmly hung up.

Now for the nightmare part of that night.

This did not happen to any of us drivers but I REALLY feel sorry for the person it did happen to.

I was watching the 10pm local news broadcast on Tuesday and they led off with this ------
(watch the video of the story. the impact is included)
                  http://fox11online.com/news/local/green ... -green-bay

They reported (with a short video from Facebook) about 11pm that a car got stuck on the railroad tracks at an intersection in our area. Not long after getting stuck a long freight train (I estimate going approx. 30 - 40 mph from the video footage) struck the car. No one was injured.

We frequently use this particular intersection and I was using it a lot on Monday night,

This is how bad it was just an hour after we stopped delivering.

                      Oh yeah, that's always great.

The way the storm hit, people working second shift would've had no problems getting to work because it was snowing lightly; they likely would've had it held against them if they called in. But by the time they were done, the storm was so bad and so much snow accumulated people couldn't get home.

My dad drove my mom in to work; when he went to pick her up in his SUV he made it maybe 30 feet down the street and got stuck. He had to get the snowblower and make a path back to the driveway. My mom got a ride home with a co-worker who lives nearby and has a four-wheel drive truck.

I don't know what I would've done if I worked that night. Probably would've had to walk home. These snowstorms have a funny way of hitting when I have to work. I lucked out this time.
