  • Free hotel room (not for being sucky) and a tip for avoiding hotel noise.

hi everyone. So tonight I am staying in the hotel where I work. Winter storm Kayla's bearing down on us and is supposed to get nasty during the night. Bossman wanted somebody here just in case the roads shut down or someone can't get their car out. I volunteered since I really don't want to be out in the snow waiting for the bus (if it's even running).

because this is an employee's stay to support the business, I get the room for free!the only thing that went wrong is my first room had an adjoining door to one of our Colorado cannabis tour guests. They were not being obnoxious or anything, but sound carries in those rooms. Doors open, that's the point of them. Sound will leak through a doorway in ways it can't through a solid wall. I got moved to another room and was fine.

So if you want quiet, here is a tip: ask the front desk agent if the room you are getting connects to another room, and ask to be put somewhere else if it does.

Also, you can usually make requests when you book online. Type "no connecting doors please" in that happy little box. Request compliance cannot be guaranteed, but you have a lot better chance of getting the room type and location you want if you tell them what your wishes are before you arrive. I go through my list at 9am and assign that day's arrivals, and I start with special requests. People who don't care (or don't seem to) end up with whatever is left.

Sarcasm dear, sarcasm. I’m well aware that dealing with civilians in any capacity will skin your faith in humanity alive, then pickle anything that remains so as to watch it shrivel up into an immortal husk thus reminding you of how dead inside you now are.

My last hotel stay was for 8 days and they placed me....beside the laundry room where folks are doing laundry all odd hours of the day and night. Fortunately the front desk realized as I was checking in and moved me to another room.

I'll make a note of that. Every other room I had was near the elevators (lifts for UK readers) and I could hear all the comings and goings.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

We don't HAVE guest rooms right next to the laundry room. Guest laundry is between the breakroom and the boardroom. We do have rooms on the first floor where the pool and such are, but they're pretty far down the hall next to meeting rooms, not near the laundry room or ice machine. They actually stay pretty quiet at night because the meeting rooms aren't used much after about 5-6pm or so. The elevator area can indeed be noisy, but most people know that already.

Duly noted. Not sure the reservation website the Con uses has a request box, but if there, I definitely know what I'm putting in it.

The employee housing for my winter job is at a local, non chain hotel. The room next to mine is adjoining. I can hear when my neighbor sneezes. Oh, well, that's what earplugs are for. One nice thing though is my roommate got moved into a bigger room last week, so for the time being I have my own room. That probably won't last since they shuffle people around all the time, but I'm enjoying it while I can.

Are any of you CSrs staying at my hotel right now? Because right after I posted this, several of my guests started asking for rooms without adjoining doors, and that's never happened in the entire time I've worked here.

gee, that's great that YOUR hotel doesn't have rooms next to the laundry, but APPARENTLY the hotel that bainsidhe was referring to DOES

To be fair, it was a cheap small-town hotel, so it's not like it screamed "high class". Clearly family owned, and I suspect the laundry room used to be an actual guest room. Meh. The reviews were good and it was quiet. Good enough for me.

I was pointing out that some hotel planners apparently have brains. Obviously not all, given where bainsidhe stayed.
