  • *sigh* Will I have to tie your shoes for you as well?

Ok here's me giving you my standard 5 min pistol inst.
You shoot almost off a 2x3' target board at 10ft where I see your not even looking at the funny little things called sights and wonder why you did not hit center
Ok again here's the 5 min refresher, with much pointed and small drawings of sight picture,
Shoot again, again by not following anything I told you on grip, arm placement, trigger control, or even KEEPING THE PISTOL INFRONT OF YOUR FACE.
Yes she would move her head off to the side and jerk the trigger.
No you didn't hit the center or even close, in fact your not just bad your unsafe-not following basic ins. I thought military teams, small arms school for civ, Boy Scout but I can't teach you if you don't listen.
    *repeat all inst*
AGIAN look away and just wing on off.
    ok your done.
WHY? ok maybe because operating a lethal devise we want you to point it in the right place. The BF was cool had a clue and understood she was not listening so I stopped.

Ok you bring grand pap to the range. Ok he does not speak much English ok.
I poll you on his shooting experience. When, what oh you want to shoot a .45 right off the bat. ok he has shot, ok.
Again give the 5 min inst just in case.
Again I can see changes to bad hand grip, not sighting.
Get translate again 5 min brief, much back and fourth in Spanish, I don't speak it but I get the idea, he tried to get grandpa the idea. Still he's all over the place.
oh now you say he hasn't shot since being a kid. Well that would of been nice to know.
OK move on to rifle, I take them to a nice easy 9mm. It has a eotech holo sight.
    It real easy to use,
Red circle, with a red dot in the middle, put the dot where you want the bullet it go. you got it?
    Si
    miss,
    translate explain, you see it,
    Si
    nope all over the place.

    Again translate inst,
    Oh that!
    *sign*
I gave the WTF look at the son, he shrugged and understood I was trying.
Then he wanted to shoot a .44 Desert Eagle.
    oh hells no
Thankfully only the son wanted to do it and it went well for over a hour I had to deal with just him.

Was she flinching because of potential kick? I can see myself doing that. Of course that's why I don't go to shooting ranges, and if I did, I'd be damn sure to ask the range master what I was doing wrong and do my best to follow his instructions to correct it. If I couldn't overcome the reflex, it would be time to hang it up and go home.

If the SC misses the target, obviously it's not to lack of proper handling. They're experiencing lag.

Or their controller sensitivity needs adjusting.

I'm guessing they're using the fairly standard arms extended stance (Rosco by all means tell me to go pound sand, I'm just guessing and don't have your knowledge ) - Your arms are straight infront of you, both hands holding the pistol. Unless your firing a Deagle or something massive like a .44/Casul (was just talking about the "anti-bear round" with a workmate yesterday) you shouldn't have any kick that comes near your face. There will be recoil yes, but not that severe imho.

And this is why Rosco would probably love you as a customer.

Indeed. It's scary how good I can get someone shooting in short amount of time if they listen.

If this forum had a rep system I give you some. I will use that this weekend.

              I keep the stance basic-

IF they have some clue or it could work I show them the weaver stance

              Flinching would be something else.

              She was more like this-

They are amazed I can look at their target and such as when they shoot a perfect vertical line of holes. AFTER I said to exhale and hold your breath before shooting. Low and behold, as I said if you breathe when shoot the pistol with rise and fall with your combined chest/arm reaction and string out your shots up and down.

                Eesh.

Maybe it's because I grew up using cameras with viewfinders, but even the first time I went shooting, I kinda knew there was a little step in between "point" and "shoot" called "aiming" and merely "pointing" is not in fact "aiming." Also that it kind a helped if you didn't move after the aiming part.

Yeah, that's it. I'm gonna blame it on technology.

I've never shot a gun. Never even held one. Even I can tell the girl in the pic above is doing it wrong

Done air-pistol shooting, air rifle, and .22's with Air Cadets, but not proper/traditional pistols.
Also shot a 303. Barring the air pistol, the rest was shooting prone. One day I'll go to the states and find one of those Ranges that let you shoot almost any gun they can have.
I'll also be damn sure to listen to the instructor. Like I've said in another post, gun safety was drilled into me so well, I find myself doing it on nerf guns. XD

As my firearms instructor told me, "See those things on the top? They're called "sights" for a reason." Aha. My shooting improved at least tenfold once he pointed that out, e.g. I was actually hitting the target instead of shooting over the top of it as I had been previously.

                        Always trust your front sight.

The only way a handgun is going to hit you in the face is either you have the gun so close to your face your nose is going to get bit by the hammer or you hold it so loosely/let go of the gun after firing and the kick back throws it into your face.

The woman in the picture should never hold a firearm. Ever. Give her a squirt gun.
Figers are vicious I tell ya. They crawl up your leg and steal your belly button lint.

                        I'm a case study.

Last time I fired a firearm was when I was completing my Riflery merit badge when I was still in the Boy Scouts. Probably 20 years ago now.

Part of me does want to go to a gun range some day and go through something like what the OP does-- some instruction, trying out some handguns while shooting at paper targets, just to see how well I do.

My sister did it once with her friends, and still has her target to show for it. And she had some good grouping on her shots, too!

Hey Rosco, how do your customers react to being in a strange and alien environment where they aren't allowed to do whatever they want? I imagine being around employees who don't kiss their asses is scary for them.

I think that we all have a gun on us helps reinforcing the notion that we are in charge, not them. Also it's made clear you are going to be told what to do. Not that people don't try. But mgmt wants us to be firm, a lot of our rule are written literally in blood and for both our safety they are not bendable. Thankfully the few I do have to remind say and mean it when they apologize. It's unique place to work.
