  • Another valet employee quit

I found out from my husband today that another valet employee quit. Apparently he is not getting full-time hours which he needs to support himself and his family. The valet hours were cut in December of 2015. He has been asking for more hours, but apparently he is not getting enough. As of this coming Monday he will be working full-time as a porter from 7 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. He will be working for another division of his employer.

And one of the CSR's has to cover for the remaining valet employees when they go to lunch. So that means he cannot do all of the duties he has to do as a CSR. So my husband has to do what he cannot do which means that he cannot get everything he has to do done. One job he has to do is space counts for 4 garages. The area manager over 3 of those garages expects my husband to get the space counts done every day. The property managers over those garages expect the space counts to be done every Monday through Friday no matter what happens. If this does not happen, then that area manager gets an e-mail from them.

My husband and one of his co-workers are guessing that the property management company, which their employer has a contract with, wanted these changes to happen before renewing the contract at the end of December 2015.

My husband also has to work an 8 hour shift this Saturday and Sunday for an event. Whether or not he gets over-time is up to the property management company. Either he will get over-time or he will be told to take 2 days off this coming week. It will be interesting to find out what their decision is.

Please tell us that your husband is looking for another job! There is no way these changes are at all workable for anybody, and for his bosses to think they can make it work is just insanity. I really hate it when a company bends over backwards like this for their clients - it's really the employees that get shafted.

Assuming you're in the US, that's kinda sorta not legal. At all...unless it was agreed to in his contract or he's on salary. The +50% is based on hours in ONE week, not one pay period (often two weeks).

You are not the only one who has mentioned this. My co-workers as well as supervisors have mentioned this. But it still happens. I do not know how the Senior manager over the area of garages my husband works at does this.

I asked him today when I called him at work if he was told if he was going to get over-time or get 2 days off. He told me that the manager on duty, who works Monday through Wednesday and then Saturday and Sunday has to call the garage manager/area manager on call this weekend to find out. Then that person has to have a meeting with the Senior manager who then has a meeting with the client.

It would be nice if he got 16 hours over-time.

I have talked to him about his looking for a better job. This was the beginning of this year. He told me that he is happy doing what he is doing.

Honestly...Mainly because I don't wanna endanger any jobs: I recommend that he document any and all times this happens. On paper (at home, of course), with copies of the paycheck stubs. Dates, times, etc. Stick it all in a box in a safe place.

From your descriptions of this place, his job may be in danger anyway even if he's the best thing to happen to that company in years. Once he (and you?) eventually moves on, or is made to do so, give the Labor Board a call and ask to set up a time to review the paperwork to see if they believe you have a case. It's my understanding that they normally either work for free or on a "Pay x%, only if you win" basis. It's worth a shot. It may also be worth it to contact them anyway (WITHOUT revealing the place of employment) to ask if this is something that they handle. Just an "Info only" type of call.

Naturally, have him write down any incidents that might constitute harassment/hostile work environment, as well.

Just because a person likes doing what they are doing it does not mean they should be a doormat for their bosses. It is because of this sort of thing that your husband's bosses keep doing what they are doing. He is exactly the sort of employee that they prefer because they can keep abusing his rights and making him do this sort of thing. And, as a result, they will keep on doing this or worse until exactly the wrong person gets pissed off and goes public.

Seriously, unless your husband enjoys being a doormat, he seriously needs to get another job before he finds himself out of work because of the company's stupidity. Because I am pretty sure that the company is going to find themselves without a contract sooner than they expected because there is no way they can live up to the promises they have made to the client.

                I agree.

I will e-mail this post to him for him to read.

He has a feeling that the CSR who has to relieve the valet employees for lunch is not happy, but that CSR would not say that to anyone in management.
