Recently, and at both jobs I might add, I have had a fair
number of customers bring stuff up to the counter, pause
there long enough for me to go into the required cashier
speak, start ringing them up, and poof!. They decide they
need to shop more and meander away from the counter.

This kind of thing accounts for probably 80% of my voids at work. It's frustrating, especially when I have a line of people behind them. Don't come to the counter unless you're really ready, people!

What makes it worse, is that if there is a bad audit, the brainiacs at
above store level look at voided transactions, among other things.
If a cashier has what they consider too many, it could lead to that
person getting fired. I've seen it happen once.
Like you say, the majority of voids are customer related. Stuff like
this, not having enough money, their card being declined, etc.

So yes, voids are a bad thing. Worse depending on where you work.

I have about a zillion voids a day and no one has said boo to me about it in 11 years. I guess I'm safe.

I know the at my work system keeps track of certain things, like price adjustments. I've never seen anyone fired or even talked to about it. In fact, most employees at my store don't know it's tracked. I have no idea what their threshold for too many adjustments is, but probably it's just a backup in case they suspect something, they can go an check for a pattern. Maybe?

A the old BoutiqueGrocery, we could hit "Error Correct" to remove the last item scanned, but that was it. Anything else required a manager's key.

The general idea they put forth is that it stops cashiers from literally giving product away by not really charging for it.
