  • Bossman is hinting at firing me

So after 8 months of working my tail off, giving my job everything I've got, and getting screwed up by my ADHD, asking for Employee Assistance multiple times (was told 6 months ago they didn't have a program...they do) and putting up with labor law violations because I like my boss....

Now he's hinting at firing me.

Yes, I'll admit I don't perform up to standards. Yes I've been screwing up. I have ADHD, but I wasn't the only one checking in the wrong rooms, thank you very much. Everyone was doing that (I still think it's a computer issue). I'm not the one swearing at other employees in the hearing of guests. I wasn't the one who got away with chatting on the (work) phone and playing around on the Internet while others picked up his slack for over 6 months.

Until recently nobody made any effort to see that I didn't go through a 8+ hour shift with no food and no chance to use the restroom. I still work different shifts on different days (we're talking about starting at 7am vrs starting at 3pm here) so I can't have a consistent sleep schedule.

They've basically (if unintentionally) done everything they can to wreak my body and mind, but now it's up to me to either get it in gear or find another job. Once again I get to be the village idiot. I've never succeeded at anything and now this.

I'm having some thoughts of just letting my train to work tomorrow hit me.

Please don't do that; we'd miss you very much here.

It sounds like management is thoughtless at best, possibly gaslighting you at worst. It's not you. Your ADHD doesn't make things any better, but that's hardly your fault and they should still try to work with you.

My depression was screwing up my life and my job, and I didn't realize how badly it was doing so until I got onto medication. You might want to talk to your doctor about your ADHD.

Talk with the Labor Board. NOW. While I hope that your instincts are wrong, the fact remains that you're being screwed over, and, depending on your state, laws are possibly being violated (Federal law does not mandate breaks for non-minors, but many states (and corporations) do).

My state DOES mandate breaks. Bossman told me "we'll try but it isn't always possible." IANAL, but I've read the laws and breaks are required without condition. There's no "if it's possible," or convenient or anything else that employers could use to wriggle out of it. I know I should report it to CDOL but then I'll REALLY get fired. Yes retaliation is illegal, but they've got plenty of dirt on me due to ADHD screw-ups. I like this job, I like my coworkers, and I don't want to get black-balled.

I may, however, go talk to the company that does our HR and see what they think about "no breaks, no help when an employee requests it, no reasonable accommodation" (such as being on the same shift all the time).

Does your hotel have a restaurant attached to it? A position where you're constantly moving might fit you better. As long as your work gets done, no one cares if your mind wanders while running the dish machine or clearing a table.
Depending on the restaurant, you might even get a free or deeply discounted employee meal.

In any case, I wish you luck. It might not seem like it now, but you will find a job that's a good fit for you.

No Job, Person, Thing, or Situation, is worth taking a permanent solution to temporary problem.

People change, Jobs come and go, Life happens, live it, enjoy the sunshine, taste the food, smell the flowers, try new things. Volunteer to help others. See whats in the world past this moment. I am sure if you look around you can find something that is a better fit.

I once had a Boss who was a real ass, violent, loud, rude, condescending. If you stood up to him he would show you respect. Well one of the Young Managers did not know this little jem and after working 18 hour days for a month and being abused by this asshole the manager drank a 5th of jack did some coke and swallowed the end of a shot gun out in the woods.

He was found the next day by a Honey mooning couple out for a walk in the woods. (Ya real great Honeymoon for them) He left a long note about how he couldn't take the abuse anymore and felt like he had no hope. Turns out the Company was going to move him after the summer rush to run his own department for winter. They were waiting to surprise him with the news at the annual company party.

You never know whats around the corner. Sorry if any of this offends but I take it kind of personal as I have known to many that take that route. I will always speak up on this subject.

              Thanks Crai

It isn't just this job. It's giving whatever I'm doing my best effort and still failing. It isn't a temporary problem. It happened in grade school. It happened in my first job at age 17. It happened in college. I'm 36 and it's still happening now. I feel like I'm a failure, will always be a failure, and don't really want to spend the next 40 or so years dealing with being a failure.

I don't plan to act on that though. I have a husband, parents, and a cute little doggie who would be devastated if something happened to me. If I'm gone for a night, my dog wanders around looking for me and whining. I don't want to cause him to have to look for me forever.

Today I plan to send an email to my boss and explain what I feel are my areas of insufficient performance and what I plan to do to address them. Maybe I'll post it here and see what you guys think before I send it? Feedback would be helpful.

Having trouble with a particular job doesn't make you a failure. The fact you're willing to work on your problem areas certainly means you are not a failure. If I were you, though, I would try to arrange a sit down meeting with your boss. Maybe he will be more sympathetic when he sees how serious you are about improving.

In the meantime, document ALL of this -- on paper, at home. Dates, times, people. Shifts you've worked and been denied a break or bathroom break (for as far back as you can recall). Unusual/unacceptable manners in which people have spoken to you or acted around you. Especially document the emails and meetings with the management and HR (as applicable) to show that you have made a bona fide attempt to resolve the situation.

Once you have moved on to another job -- or get forced out of this one, which may very well be what's happening, through no fault of your own -- go to the Labor Board and see what they have to say.

I hope that boss felt like a real heel after that. Probably not, because there are far too many bullies and sociopaths in the world who get off on that crap.

I hate bullies. People like your ex-boss deserve to receive every gram of abuse they dish out. I hope the upper management gave him as much hell as he gave that poor fellow.

What exactly are you measuring yourself against to come out "a failure"? I don't know anybody whose life is perfect, or who never screws up, or who never gets screwed by someone else. Sometimes life sucks, I know that very well. But if you have a husband and parents and a dog who all love you, you must be doing something right!!

As for your boss, it is ILLEGAL to deny you a chance to use the bathroom. That, at the very least, must be addressed!

Yeah, these summa cum laude graduates of the Trump School of Manners and Sensitivity usually don't engage in much self-reflection. That is if they're even capable of it.

They just think they're :effective" managers who can get people to do what they want.

Got a final written today over something I did last Saturday before I started doing some of the double-checking I do now. Wanted to jump in front of a train again for a few seconds but then I thought about my dog. I am emailing my plan of improvement to Bossman right now.

As Crai said -- This job? This boss? Not worth your life nor your sanity. YOU and your health are what's most important here. Take care of yourself first and foremost. This boss isn't going to.

Just batten down the hatches, play along as needed, and update your resume. The atmosphere at this job sounds quite toxic, and, the sooner you can safely get away from it (ideally with another job -- any job), the sooner you can exorcise its demons from your life and move on.

It's actually not too bad. I just don't think Bossman is aware of the rules in Colorado. He's from another state, and maybe once my report to the labor board is made (anonymously), he'll know. He's been careful about making sure I get a chance to eat and pee after I mentioned that was an issue. I like this job, want to keep it, and don't want to be a failure in one chain and have to move to another. But if I can't hack it, I can't hack it. I did mention in my "improvement plan" that I'd asked for help 6 months ago, and didn't get it. He wasn't here then, so it isn't his fault, but he needs to know that I tried to address it and wasn't given the help I needed (and they are contracted to provide).

AGM told me they can see how hard I'm trying, and don't want to lose me, but I need to improve. That's fair. I have a therapist appointment tomorrow to work on ADHD coping skills. I've told them that due to my disability I need a consistent schedule and I'm going to get a doctor's note to that effect on Bossman's desk.
