  • A LinkedIn Photo...thoughts?

I'm getting ready to seriously beef up my LinkedIn profile. I want to add a photo, but I don't know what kind.

I'm in tech, as a software engineer, so my thoughts are:

    1. Traditional "Jacket and tie" photo.
    2. "Polo" style shirt (i.e. "business casual") photo
    3. "Western shirt" photo
    4. Plain t-shirt photo

I don't know which way to go. I was doing some reading recently about how a lot of good tech innovators of today are "t-shirt" people. But then again, a t-shirt might make me look unprofessional.

A jacket and tie photo might be overkill. I have some nice polo and western shirts I could wear, too.

Not sure which way to go here. Thoughts?

I'd say a plain, long-sleeve button-down collared shirt with a compatible tie would likely work well. No need for a jacket. If you wear glasses and their color is distinguishable in a photo, maybe wear a tie that compliments their color.

White or light blue are common shirt colors for this sort of thing, and you can't go wrong with a plain navy blue tie for a "professional look."

This goes along with what a friend of mine suggested for interviews. Though I'm not overly fond of the light blue shirt and blue tie combination. But if it works, hey, I won't complain.

You are selling yourself. Make it a good picture. This should not be a casual shot of you next to your car (Unless you are in the auto industry). What are you going to use for a backdrop, or is the photo going to be taken at a photo studio?

While you don't need to go full suit & tie, it should still be professional. No T-shirt and i would recommend against the Polo. Shirt and tie, minimum.

I'm going to try to find something plain I can use as a backdrop. I'm not going to take one at a studio. I have a digital camera with a timer on it, so I can probably use some sort of plain backdrop to take the photo. Definitely something to think about.

A few years ago, I needed a quick picture. I took one in front of a burgundy curtain. Good enough for what I was doing, but not something I would use on a resume or LinkIn. I did use it on Facebook.

How are you with PhotoShop? You could always green screen it. A friend of mine is a part time Photographer. He is always photographing walls to use as backgrounds.

I have GimpShop. I'm fairly decent with Photoshop, and GimpShop is similar.
