That's how many miles my car racked up, and then, it decided to eat it's timing chain.

For the non-automotive in the crowd, that's bad, but not as bad had it been a newer car with an interference engine. In that case, it would mean time to buy a new motor.

Fortunately for me, this car is old enough to vote and buy it's own ethanol , so all that did was just render it non-running, not trashed. And double-lucky, it did it IN THE DRIVEWAY, not out on the road.

But, now I think everything in that engine block is suspect, since it's busted three valve springs on me in the last 4 years. So what better time to rebuild it but now? Right?

    Triple-lucky, rebuild kits are still available for the 301 Pontiac V8 (78' - 83')

I'm going to beat my personal record.

When I got home at 5:40 today, here's what I had

As of 20 minutes ago, here's what I have. About 1/3 of the way out of the car, only had to stop because I spilled antifreeze on the floor disconnecting the radiator, gotta let that dry.

Keep an eye on this for updates, I'm going to try to be mobile again in 30 days.

My car is old enough to vote and buy its own ethanol, and it has an interference engine with belt-driven cam. Change interval is 4 years/100,000 km (roughly 60,000 miles), whichever comes first. Different cars have different change intervals, and chains are usually "on condition" (since common failure mode is "stretch", actually wear of the articulation points, rather than a sudden breakage).

My old Honda CRX was an OHC engine with a timing belt, and it was certainly old enough to legally drink when I sold it.

OHC engines with timing chains can be more tricky. I know that, for instance, the 2nd-gen MINI and just about all of the air-cooled Porsche 911 models were prone to timing chain problems, and since they are interference engines... The best-case scenario there is that the valves get bent and nothing else gets significantly damaged; the worst case involves blowing holes in things.

The pushrod V8 engines have a nice short chain connecting the crank to the cam, which makes for far fewer failure points. It doesn't generally need a damped tensioning mechanism, for one thing, and that is the Achilles heel of the MINI and 911 engines' valve trains.

The other, of course, involves orcs." -- John Rogers

I've ranted before that this thing's previous owner didn't give it regular oil changes, and not only did it have some notable rod knock when I bought it, but, the valve trains are caked in old oil, wouldn't surprise me if lack of lubrication is the ultimate cause here, because this is the first one I've ever broken, usually something else goes first on an OHV build like this.

Yeah, interference engine or not, if a timing belt/chain goes it's a really good idea to either get rid of the vehicle or rebuild the motor.

My old Civic finally died at 360,000 miles. I think it blew a head gasket about 40 miles east of San Diego as I was driving it here when I moved. It was having radiator troubles. It needed a new clutch. The timing belt was nearing time to be replaced. The body was in pretty bad shape. I thought briefly about fixing it but in the end decided that it was more work than I was capable of doing without access to decent tools (which I did not have at the time). Plus I really do need a minivan with a kid in a wheelchair. I would have loved to rebuild the thing though. To bad life didn't have me in a position to do so.

This thread makes me worry about my Honda Accord. It's got almost 180K miles on it. Still runs really well, but it's been paid for going on 5 years or so now, and I don't want a vehicle payment.

So darn close, but, I had to stop when I ran out of patience.

There is one, ONE lousy bolt left holding everything in there, a lone bell housing bolt (connects transmission to engine)

It's just behind and below that left blue valve cover, and man is it giving me grief. I can see it, I can reach it, but the bad angle it goes in at means the wrench just keeps slipping off, and it's too narrow to get a socket in there.

Now you know why at the factory, the engine/transmission were put together FIRST, then bolted to the frame, and then the body put down over it. How hard that would make getting to those transmission bolts if it ever had to come out wasn't really big on the list of priorities

                Should have it out tomorrow.

Just to be a smarta$$ [and I know it was probably a different car but it looks close enough] How long did it take to clean up Marvin's blood after Vince accidentally shot him?

Wasn't that Vince's excuse for being reckless with the gun? It's been a long time, can't remember.

Been a while for me too

Edit: watched the scene and Vince says Marsellus probably hit a bump who then denies it but he does say that the gun just went off

Another night's work and I'll have it stripped down to the bare engine block, and that'll follow the heads to the shop for a cleaning and re-machining.
