  • Sure, I'll take your place in Hell for ya

This is from my early days as an agent (pre 911) it still makes me mad.
I had these clients who were very Religious - they would pay more for later flights because they had to go to Church. I don’t have a problem with this, but it has to do with the events to unfold.
So they had a set of tickets that were the “use it or lose it” kind and had to make a change - no can do.
A week later the airline they were booked on had a horrible accident. The airline was allowing people to change dates, change flight equipment or get a refund if they stated that they were afraid to fly.
So guess who calls me to get their tickets refunded. I said I would look into it and call them back. I spent the next half hour being very upset about having to lie to the reservationist at the airline because a) these God fearing, church going folk obviously didn’t have a problem with my heathen soul lying for them and b) there were several airline employees and their families on that flight and I was going to have to lie to someone who may have known and been friends with the people who died (my roommate’s ex-girlfriend was on that flight too). My boss saw my distress and said to call them back and tell them to lie for themselves and if they gave me any trouble to fire them as clients.
So I call them back and state the reasons they could give to get a refund. I said “so you are going to have to lie and give one of those reasons instead of the real reason you have to cancel the trip”. They told me to go ahead and lie. I gave them the phone number and said that they were going to have to lie for themselves I wouldn’t do it. They insisted that it was “part of the service charge” that they had paid me. I got to say “if I were to sell my soul for $25 I would have at least asked for the ability to play great Blues - I’m sorry I can no longer work with you - perhaps you can find another agent who will be better suited to your needs.”
I don’t know if they ever did get the refund, but I haven’t heard from them since.

that's a case where 'the principle of the matter' saying makes sense; you have a belief, and you stood for it without allowing them to bully you into submission.

    i can't say this enough:

    look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

Thanks *munching on a virtual cookie*.
I've been known to be a "little flexible" in the truth department, but in this case I just wouldn't do it because according to their beliefs (last time I checked lying is a sin right?) they were asking me to do something B.A.D. Plus, I'd been putting up with their "holier than thou" crap for over a year. I think they got it in their heads that I was a "heathen" because I suggested once that they take the earlier ($200 cheaper) flight, skip church and give the money to a charity.
My boss earned my undying loyalty that day by letting me say exactly what I wanted to say.

well truth be told im flexable with tellign the truth when needed, but in that case your responce was the right thing. They wanted to use a tragity for their own benifit, and asking you to do something that made you uncomfortable.

P.S. i would take the early flight and donate myself, religions arent just practiced in the houses of the lord but in life.

You know... I read in a book, somwhere that any place where people gathered to discuss God could be considered a church. Now, I don't know if you've read this book, but it's one of those compilation things. Some of the authors include some guys named Matthew, John, Paul and such. They must be famous, 'cause they only need one name.

Um yeah. You seem to have acted in a more Christian manner. Sometimes people just "wear" the name. It's like "I go to church, I'm a good Christian" when they don't do anything outside of church and don't live a Christian lifestyle - I've always liked the saying "going to McDonald's doesn't make you a hamburger, and standing in a garage doens't make you a car - so going into a church and sitting there and not listening, not following the commandments, etc. outside of the church, does not make you a Christian."

I would've told them it was against MY religion to lie and the Bible commanded us not to. If they wanted to take advantage of a tragedy and lie, then they could take that up with God but I would not do it for them. Well actually, I don't know if I'd have had the guts to say all that. But I would have said I refuse to lie for them. Good for you for not letting them take advantage of the situation and refusing to lie for them!

I do go to "church" it is called the garden in my backyard - you can see me at worship for hours on any given Sunday. Although, my "love" for all God's creatures isn't always in the program, singing off key sure is

But going to McDonald's and listening to/following the rules of Hamburger-dom DOES make you a hamburger. Don't you know the new Soylent-burger is people?
