  • Sad Day, Chaotic Day, and a Bright Spot

Hi everyone. So it's been a bad couple of days.

Yesterday our elderly cat had some kind of stroke or other neurological issue. Her movement, demenor, exc all changed dramatically and she wouldn't eat or drink. Got her to the vet, and as expected, she had to be put down. She was old, she had a good life, but it still hurts. This is her:

So I was already not in the best of moods. Then the nearest hotel in our brand had an issue (to put it mildly). A guest decided to have a standoff with police. Nobody got hurt but the cops put the whole place on lockdown, and other guests coming back from dinner and those arriving for the evening were told they couldn't enter. So they were all shunted to our hotel. Which caused a rush we were in no way prepared for given our daily numbers. I was supposed to be off at 8:30pm and didn't end up leaving until 11pm.

Then there was the weird guy with the clipboard hassling people on the train for change. I've seen him before, and he's been told that solicitation on public transit was illegal. I was in no mood for this I told him in no uncertain terms to leave me alone and called transit security. At my transfer point I saw an armed officer talking to him.

Once I got home (at 1am) Hubby, Roomie and I had a crying group hug. Missy was put down this morning.

The one bright spot: A few days ago, a beautiful calico showed up at our door. We weren't going to keep her but think we will now. We named her Autumn and she's been staying in the roommate's room away from our resident adult male cat until we can get them used to each other (and get her checked out). We think she was sent to us because Missy was on her way out. We also think she might be pregnant, and if she is, we're going to give her a safe place to have her babies and find homes for them when they're old enough.

    So....KITTENS!

Sad to hear about Missy. It's always hard to lose them--we don't call them "furkids" for nothing. But it's still worth it for the love they bring to our lives.

And I'm glad you are opening your home to another kitty. And will hopefully be getting her fixed.

Yes NunavutPants she will be fixed as soon as possible. We need to find out if she's pregnant. If she is, she gets spayed as soon as possible after the kittens arrive. Otherwise it will be done within two weeks. We have an adult male kitty but he has been neutered so we don't have to worry about more kittens if she doesn't already have them. We're keeping them apart for a while so we can let them get used to each other's scent.

It hurts to lose a furry friend, but it's good to open your heart to another. Perhaps Autumn was indeed sent to you.

When our cat Trouble died, the silence in the apartment was deafening. He wasn't a noisy or active cat, but there was an unpleasant stillness without him. We adopted Millie and Chessie two months later and have been very happy.

Oh, and post pics, please! We'd love to see your kitties!

I'm sorry about your cat; my friend lost one of her two dogs last week; and I'm now watching the remaining one. Its very quiet without her; she was velcro puppy, always following your around, in your lap etc. And when I'd pet or talk to the other one, jingle, jingle, jingle, no matter where she was, she'd come and give you the stink eye for giving HIM attention and not her.

Even though she wasn't my dog, i've watched them multiple times each year for the last 10 or so so they are almost like mine.

I miss the little fur butt. The new kitty is helping, in some ways, but not in others. Mainly because I don't want to fall in love with another cat. If she stays (which is looking more and more likely), someday we'll lose her too. So I don't want to love her. Even if she is pretty, and soft, and brave, and friendly, and....

            Damn it.

Dooo eeeet... Seriously, they love you right back and it's so rewarding.

(Especially they love you if you're the one providing the treats!)

The love is worth the eventual heartbreak. I know I must lose my two furry friends some day, but I wouldn't have missed adopting them for the world. I believe that all of our loved ones, human and otherwise, who have gone on still love us and want us to be happy. Don't be afraid to give your heart to another kitty; love is the one thing that, the more that's given, the more there is to give.

PS: Since PastryGal posted her kitty pics, I'll post mine; here's a recent picture of my Chessie.

The calico is staying. She's already wormed her way in to my heart, and she and the resident cat seem to be getting used to each other. Hubby took a video of them the other day, I'll post it sometime soon.

                          Ok ok!

                          This is Autumn:

The picture isn't great but you can get the gist of what she looks like. She's friendly and likes being petted but doesn't seem to be a cuddler (at least not yet).

Just for the sake of fairness, here is the rest of the family. This is our resident male Velcro (this was taken when he was a kitten but he looks the same just bigger, I do have more photos but they're on my phone, which is dead right now):

And finally our dog Mutley the Wonderpooch. He's a wire haired dachshund who was born blind and does just fine anyway.

All the furkids are cuties. Extra hugs for all from me, please.

They are all cuties, but I do have a soft place for calicos. Their bold splashes of color are just marvelous.
