  • No, we didn't ruin your Thanksgiving

I've been working at the Warehouse for several years now, it is the ONLY job that I've worked at which is closed four days a year and has been that way since before I started working here. Thanksgiving is one of those days and, thankfully, I'm glad that it is.

So this customer, who I will call Pie Lady, wanted to place an order for a bunch of pies. I didn't start helping her out because she had placed a cake order, so with me being the only person who's on the other side of the bakery that can deal with her, I go up to the counter to see what she wants. Pie Lady was nice to me, but seemed a bit peeved when I first started to help her. Okay, fine, whatever, I don't know what happened between her and the cake decorator but I'm sure I'll find out.

Pie Lady just wants a couple of apple pies for Thanksgiving, no problem, so I ask her when she wants the pies -- she says on Thursday, which we are closed for. I tell her this and that we can make the order for Wednesday at the latest. Pie Lady decided to have a tantrum right there, saying that the cake decorator said the same thing but refuses -- REFUSES! -- to believe that we are closed for Thanksgiving and that she cannot take any pie that wasn't baked on Thanksgiving day as it will be moldy, smell bad, etc etc.

Because, you know, pies aren't edible unless they are oven fresh!

Took all I had not to laugh at her, said that I've been with the Warehouse for several Thanksgivings now and that we have not been open for Thanksgiving since before I even started. Pie Lady swore at me, said that she now couldn't do anything for Thanksgiving because she always -- ALWAYS!!!! -- centers the whole meal around the pie, and stomped off. I expected to get a complaint from her, but I didn't.

    NOT DONE YET!

Because I worked this morning and left around 1 pm or so, I didn't get to witness her second act. One of my co-workers called me a few hours later and asked me if I helped Pie Lady. Told them that, yes, I helped her but that she threw a fit over not getting her damn pies on Thanksgiving Day. Apparently the customer came back, did the same spiel about getting her cake/pie/whatever on Thanksgiving Day, threw a fit, and then proceeded to start to trash the cake case that's in front of the bakery. Apparently the cops were called, she got shiny new bracelets, then blamed me, the cake decorator, and at least four others for ruining her Thanksgiving.

Moral of story: don't act like a damn idiot over a couple of pies and you won't get arrested before Thanksgiving.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

Nutcase. Who centers an entire meal around PIE?

Unless it's pizza pie, but hey...

If a person does center a meal around pie (I see nothing wrong with this, my family are dessert people) then why not make the pie from scratch? I haven't met a store bought pie that could stand up to a homemade one. Cheesecake, yes, I'll take a Costco cheesecake over my own any day. But pie? No.

Also, omg, is this the same lady as over in check it out?

        MoonCat -- I agree entirely!

notalwaysright -- I'm the opposite, as I can't eat homemade pie without wondering how much grease was used to make it.

No, it wasn't. Not even the same area/chain.

Fuck's sake...if it's THAT important to have a fresh-outta-the-oven pie for Thanksgiving, MAKE ONE YOURSELF. It's not like anyone buys a turkey or ham the morning OF Thanksgiving...they buy that shit days if not weeks in advance and keep it in the icebox.

Dang right. If you can't make pastry, you can buy it - heck, you can even get it ready rolled out. If you can't be arsed to peel and slice the apples, you can buy a can of apple pie filling. It's not so much baking a pie as assembling it.

Never underestimate the stupidity (or suckiness) of a customer. I can imagine a number of scenarios:
Whadda you mean the store is closed? How am I supposed to get my turkey for tonight?
Whadda you mean you're out of turkeys? I *NEED* one for tonight!
Whadda you mean this turkey needs to be thawed for 24 hours before cooking? I *NEED* to cook it for tonight!

What a self-centered customer. Also, the Thanksgiving meal is centered around the turkey. On the other hand, put those two together, and the customer is definitely a turkey. One thing I can never understand - with so many turkeys out there (customers, drivers, etc.), why are there just as many after Thanksgiving or Christmas as there were before?

Her Thanksgiving's not ruined, she won't even have to cook this year. The State will do that for her.

I hope your store presses charges tp the fullest...

                  Check, Check and...check.

I have heard all of those. Some of them ten minutes prior to closing on Thanksgiving eve.

                  in fact, all of them.

And for the third, the number of people that bothered to find that out is dwarfed by the sheer number buying them without even a thought. I really hope none of them were planning on frying theirs.

You guys didn't ruin her Thanksgiving. SHE did! I hope management was allowed to ban her ass from the store (and the rest of her, too -- though she was talking out of her ass the whole time, so that's all she really needed)...

My guess? She was gonna take the pre-made pies, warm them up in the oven, and then tell her family and guests how much time she had spent that morning making all of those pies from scratch...

I don't know what the process is after customers get arrested, I've seen it only a handful of times since I started and we lowly peons aren't usually privy to anything else. Pretty sure that she'll at least get banned from the property and some fines, not sure though. I'll ask next time I see my manager.

I know that there's going to be some upset customers in the next few days. Because of a couple of customers that have ordered 20+ pies, we are now going to run out of all but two by tomorrow afternoon. Unfortunately we won't be getting anything else in until next week as our manager ordered enough pies to get us through until the first week in December. But because a few idiots decided to order a shit ton of pies for today and tomorrow, no one else will be able to get any in.

And when I call these customers idiots, I mean they are the run of the mill idiots -- if they were ordering for, say, a shelter or a food bank that's one thing. Only one is for a shelter, the other five or six? Yea, they've collectively ruined Thanksgiving as we can not take orders for any pies besides Pecan.

Where do you work that you can't order more pies? I've worked at places that get deliveries every or every other day, and you can special order things like that.

With a reaction that extreme I kind of wonder if she has some kind of mental issue going on. I never hurt anyone other than myself but I did some batshit crazy stuff before they figured out my meds.

She sounds like she's related to the SC who called the pizza place I used to work at on Christmas Eve, asking what time we were open the next day. When I informed her that we were closed both Christmas and Boxing Day, she threw a tantrum, screaming, "What am I supposed to do for Christmas dinner?!" Eventually, she shrieked that her kids were going to starve and it was all my fault, before slamming down the phone.
