  • Hubby just ruined someones New Year and I'm rather proud of him

So, hubs is disabled and doing self employment as an insurance estimator.

Yesterday, his 80 year old mother ended up in the hospital because she has the flu. (Yes, she did get her flu shot, but they don't protect from all the flu strains.) As she was being checked out, they found some heart problems. If she is well enough, she will get a couple of stents on Wednesday.

Today, his 86 year old father ended up in the hospital due to flu caused pneumonia.

Hubs called all of the customers he had scheduled next week and flew off to WV.

I just got a call from a customer who lives in the sticks. Not my semi-close to town sticks, his estimate was going to involve a 3 hour drive just to get there. Seriously in the sticks.

He was frothing at the mouth. He had to have his estimate no matter what was happening, he couldn't afford to pay for a rental car while my sweetie was enjoying the holidays with his family. If my sweetie didn't fly back right away, and get it taken care of, it was going to ruin his finances for the year.

So sorry dude. It looks like our new year started out sucky and expensive as well. From what I know, your problems were all self caused and you don't get a lot of sympathy. The reason my sweetie hasn't answered his phone is probably because he is at the hospital or sleeping or both. Scream at him like you did to me and he will just refuse the job. (Which will mean that you will have to pay a tow truck to get your truck to the insurance estimator. )

I don't know what to say. If I were self-employed and had a customer react like that, I would simply toss the job back at him/her and tell them to find somebody else. Whatever your hubby's being paid isn't enough to put up with crap like that.

Thanks and yeah. That job would have paid $90 plus mileage. Certainly not worth paying to fly from WV to AZ to avoid ruining someone else"s finances for the year.

The SC chose to live up there in the sticks, knowing full well that there were no services up there.

He has to haul water just to flush his toilet for crying out loud. He chose to not pay for rental car coverage, drove into the side of the mountain and wants to use Joe Bondo's back yard body shop for the repairs. AND his insurance coverage would only pay for one tow, so instead of paying the extra to get it to a real shop, he had it towed to Joe's yard and now he can't get down the mountain to get food or water and its all hub's fault.

His year is ruined, and I just helped in the ruination. I texted hubs to say that SC was an SC. Hubs told me to block his number. SC is fired.

I'd suggest since the estimate has a "plus mileage" rider, you could calculate the distance from WV to the location (and back) and use that as the mileage amount.

Of course, from the sounds of it, this client probably wouldn't pay the 3hours worth of mileage, let alone that full amount, so it's not really worth working out the full distance other than as a daydream. (Would the mileage rate even cover a plane tik cost, theoretically speaking? )

Its kinda complicated, but hubs is an independent estimator who gets his jobs from the customer's insurance company and gets paid by the insurance company for each estimate. This is something that some companies will do for their customers who live and work more than a certain distance from one of their estimating sites.

Hubs is the only estimator that company has who is willing to drive that far, so by being a jerk to me and to hubs in extension, jerk has guaranteed that nobody will do his estimate in a location and time convenient for him. Sucks to be him.

Goodness, and I thought having to have both our cars worked on, to the tune of $1700 for one and $1100 for the other was bad, one right before New Year's and the other right after. Hope everyone is doing okay now!

Dang, I'm sorry about your car problems. What a rotten time to have to put that much money out all at once.

Things have actually gotten worse as far as the in-law situation is concerned. Its looking like hubs will be in WV for longer than expected.

The only hope his SC has now is to be able to browbeat his agent into agreeing to pay an additional tow. Considering the other bad decisions he has already made, I doubt that he is a top tier customer for them either.

Please have a lot of sympathy for me as well. Hubs feeds the cats their gooshy fud at 4:30. I don't get home until 5:30. My feline overlords are not pleased with this development. I'm currently living with FIVE SC's who pretend to not understand English.
