  • This guy made a BIG boo-boo...

Assuming this story is true, this guy made a big boo-boo. Not entirely his fault, but it kinda reminds us that hubris is not always a good thing...

I believe the term for a speculator having to take physical delivery when they can't close out a position is "puking out". For there to be a term for it, it must happen on a fairly regular basis.

In the comments, one thing that's mentioned is that the guy who ordered the trade was high-ranking and told the people who mentioned the problem he was creating "shut up and execute the trade". Many times there will be someone at a low level who spots a mistake and brings it to someone's attention. What they do with the information is another story.

I ran into a few situations like that. In other threads, I've told about the LTL shipment from Massachussets to Montreal that included an item going to Ontario, California. Another one was a pickup in New Jersey for delivery near Toronto where the bills of lading said "Must cross border at Sarnia". I sent a message to dispatch questioning this, and was told to cross at Queenston (where I would have crossed if the point hadn't been specified). What probably happened was that the NJ facility was relatively new, with an older facility being on I75, and that some of the stuff they shipped was hazardous materials. The Blue Water Bridge (Sarnia/Port Huron) allows hazmat, the Ambassador bridge (Windsor/Detroit) doesn't, so "boilerplate" in the BOL intended for their I75 facility being copied to BOLs for their NJ facility would at least double the length of the trip.

Would be REALLY interesting if instructions said "Must cross at Peace Arch" for a shipment from the Northeast U.S. to the Toronto area, the driver brought up with dispatch that maybe they meant "Must cross at Peace Bridge", and dispatch told them to shut up and follow the instructions. Peace Arch (not a truck route - trucks go through Pacific, less than a mile away) is on the West coast, Peace Bridge is between Buffalo NY and Fort Erie ON. Would add around a week and a half to a one-day trip.
