  • No dogs in the grocery store please.

We had a customer (since been banned from the store due to this incident) who liked to stop by while walking her dog... At 1am...

Which would have been fine if she left it outside.

But she liked to stuff her dog (some kind of terrier) in her jacket. Kinda obvious when part of your jacket is protesting being shoved in such a small place. But then, and here's the kicker, she would put it on the floor when she was out of site. No leash just let it loose. And she wouldn't pay attention to the dog at all while she was shopping.

When confronted she's always 'well he must have slipped his collar and walked right in to find me' 'he's so smart *que baby noises*'. This time her dog headed right to the pet food aisle and proceeded to ruin $100s of dollars worth of stock.

    Picture this if you will.

Three bags of the largest bags we have ripped and strum all over the floor. Dog treat packs shredded all up and down the aisle, displays toppled over, dozens of glass containers (jams from another freaking aisle). The dog pissed on some bags of sugar and flour in yet another aisle so now we have to clean that up and the ruined stock and take everything off the shelf to scrub the floor under it and the shelf itself. Most of the products nearby were taken off just in case.

But she can't leave the dog outside because 'he'll get lonely' or 'it's too cold out there for him' (then what are you doing walking him outside at this time of night lady?)

She even tried to get out of it by saying that he's a service dog. (Yet there's no vest, and she can't produce any paperwork or even tell us the organization that 'trained' him. Or what service he's supposedly providing) Honey, my brother has a service dog because he's autistic and occasionally gets angry and tries to self harm (head slamming against things, scratching at his arms, etc) or he tries to lash out at others. The dog we have is a huge freaking mastiff. My brother is quite short like the rest of our family. The dog's job is to literally knock him over when his anger is at a certain point and lay on him (effectively pinning him in place) until he calms down. She is extremely well behaved. They are trained that way. No service dog would go tearing through a store like that.
Don’t worry about what I’m up to. Worry about why you are worried about what I’m up to.

No properly trained pet would do that either. My grandfather used to "dog-sit" my mother's last (and all-time favourite) dog, and Grandpa would take the dog to the little family market a few blocks away. He would bring the dog in the store with him. She was about the size of a German Shepherd; she stayed by his side, didn't bother anything or anybody, and didn't try to help herself to treats. And she certainly never peed on anything.

Glad to hear that idiot was banned. She and Widdle Cupcake can go wreak havoc somewhere else.

Please tell me they made the woman pay for at least some of the damages...? A long shot in this day and age, I know, but...

No wonder you like horses better than people!

That is being said by someone who would rather pet an animal than talk to a human.

You aren't allowed to ask much about a service dog. But service dogs don't leave their owner's side and go play when they are in public. The woman is only disabled by stupidity and entitlement.

My mother pet-sat an actual guide dog while the owner, a friend of hers, was in the hospital. The dog was incredibly well-behaved.

I too hope she was forced to pay before being kicked to the curb...

A place of business can ask that any animal, service animals included, be removed if it is being aggressive or damaging. I would assume urinating in a grocery store is also valid.

Reminds me of two events that happened a couple of weeks ago.

One part of a week, someone left their dog outside, tied to a hook in a wall near the 15 minute parking. It barked and growled at everyone. I let the managers know and they went outside to keep an eye on it. When the owner showed up because I guess one of their friends told him of what was going on inside, they told him to not to bring their dog if this was going to happen again.

The owner agreed and then tried to bring their dog inside, claiming they had a few groceries left inside. The managers refused and told him that it wasn't allowed. As expected, the dog owner claimed that others brought their dog inside, so he was allowed to as well. The managers replied that they were service dogs and that his wasn't. I'm not sure what happened next, but I guess the dog owner had to rely on their friends to get their groceries, as the dog owner had to leave.

The second event was that someone who brought their service dog into the handicapped men's room stall and let them do their business on the floor. I let the managers know, as either I was the first one to discover it or cared enough to report it.

As least I hope it was a service dog that poo'ed on the floor, going by the smell.

ND: In the latter one...I think they just blamed the dog. A proper service dog is extremely unlikely to do that unless the owners go out of their way to provide him a chance to do it in an appropriate place. Dollars to doughnuts, they brought the poor pooch in there just for that purpose/because they were too embarrassed to admit what they had done, or too dumb to just leave without saying anything like most bathroom crap-bandits do.

                      True that.

Just out of curiosity, are you allowed to have a 'service dog'-whether an actual one or a claimed one-removed from the shop if it's being aggressive or disruptive?

Where I work, a disruptive or dangerous critter will be removed. Critters who do nothing but sit on the floor or sleep in their carriers or strollers are allowed to stay. I have seen "service" dogs in strollers, cats in carriers, clipped wing birds and once a couple of rats in a cage.

We once had an issue when a customer with a real service dog was sitting in the lobby and a woman with a couple of children came in and demanded that he be thrown out because her kids were afraid of dogs. That dog was much more welcome in our lobby than her undisciplined children.

The end result was that the woman got put in a kiosk where her kids couldn't see the dog to wait her turn. The customer with the service dog was moved to the front of the line because he had to listen to her and we all felt sorry for him.

Yep-even legit service dogs can be removed if they won't behave. It'snjust pretty rare because legit service dogs are very seldom a problem.
