  • Have you LOOKED outside?

It rained today. That mostly goes without saying around here; the Store is situated in one of the rainiest parts of the country, and it's been an especially rainy winter and spring this year due to the La Nina - as of two weeks ago, we'd already surpassed the amount of rainfall this region typically gets all year.

You can imagine my frustration when customers come up to me at the front of the store, over and over again throughout the course of the day, and ask "where are the dry carts?"

There aren't any dry carts. It's raining outside. It's been raining almost every day since, like, November or so. The carts that are in the vestibule right now haven't been there for more than a few minutes, because we have so many people flowing into the store that there's practically no turn-around between when a customer exits the store and puts their cart in the corral, the cart caddy collects it and brings it in, and a new customer grabs it. We do not possess some sort of car-wash-strength blow dryer, nor do we have attendants on hand with 300-thread Egyptian cotton chamois to hand-dry each cart before it makes its way to you. They're wet because everything is wet. A little water won't make you melt, elsewise you'd have dissolved halfway through the parking lot.

And no, we aren't going to supply paper towels for you to dry off the handles lest your delicate palms come into contact with the slightest amount of moisture. We'd never be able to keep our vestibule clean ever again considering the clientele's continued failure to deposit trash in the trash receptacle as opposed to on the floor, on product displays, behind vending machines, or in other carts.

    BONUS WTF: Yes, we do

I was walking down the center aisle of the store when I heard a woman exclaim to the other woman shopping with her, "I can't believe they don't sell EGGS here!"

I interjected; "Ma'am, were you looking for eggs?"

She said "Yes! I've looked EVERYWHERE in this store and you don't even have eggs!"

I then pointed to the four-foot-tall letters on the back wall, easily visible from that vantage point, which read "EGGS", and said "They're right back there. Under the sign."

    "Oh," she replied.

The supermarket gets that in spades. When I worked on Checkouts, customers would be constantly whining about the wet trolleys when it was raining. Some would "helpfully" suggest that the trolley boys could wipe the trolleys off with paper towels when they brought them in.

Look, the trolley boys are out in that torrential rain all day and by the way, they have enough to do what with your inability to put the trolleys back where they came from or at least in the corral; ie collecting every single stray trolley left in a disabled parking space/in the motorcycle parking area/in the road/in the car park belonging to another supermarket/stuck in the hedge. Bring your own paper towel and dry the damn trolley off yourself.

Why was she looking for them in the center aisle, of all places?!? o_O I've never seen a grocery that put them anywhere but the dairy section on the far left wall...

Would this be a bad time to mention that the Costco I goes to has their greeter/card checker wipe off your cart as you enter the store on rainy days?

Yes, but you're paying to shop there so a little extra service isn't all out of the ordinary. For your everyday open-to-all stores that is an unreasonable request...

Get this ALL the TIME...sucks when you have to put Little Billy or Suzie in the kid's seat, and can't find a dry cart, but don't blame me. You should have brought your own damn towel to wipe down the cart if you knew it was pouring outside. Especially frustrating when a customer digs into a line of carts to "find a dry one" towards the back, leaving all of the carts they pull out loose behind them to block my way when I come in with a new batch of carts.

We got this all the time at the wholesale club on rainy weekends. It was busy to begin with because of the weekend, and so carts were getting taken as soon as the cart guys could get them in.

And we got plenty of salt and vinegar from the sucktomers who didn't like that their delicate hands would get wet from the carts.

I wonder where the Costco is that dries off the handles? We get so much rain I can't think of ANY store that dries it's carts. If you get the tiny carts, those are often dry because the customer might have only had one or two bags, and left the cart inside. But when the handle is wet, it's wet. It's not the end of the world. If so, move someplace else.

It's funny, I didn't even realize how much rain we've gotten (I'm in the same general area as the OP) because I'm so used to it. When I looked it up, I also found that for 5 months, from Oct 1 to March 9, we only had 9 sunny days. Heck yeah it's damp. Deal with it. Oh, and Portland beat us, with only 7 sunny days in that time frame.

I know of one grocery store that at least attempts to dry its carts, and they never bother to try during high density times like weekends because of the fast turnaround in cart usage. My pet peeve is when people leave the motorized scooter carts out in the rain and don't tell anyone. Between leaving them everywhere, cars ramming them in the lot and failing to plug them back in, they clearly don't want to have any functional carts available to them when they come.

It's a pity you can't take their names and, when they inevitably come back, tell them you don't have any operational carts. When the whining starts tell them "It's because idiots like you left them in the rain in the parking lot!" Might get people to be a bit less careless next time.

                    Yeah, right...

I really love those jerks who leave the motorized carts blocking a handicapped parking stall. While I don't need any of those options, I know that people who do are probably severely inconvenienced by this behavior.

If I see one of those rather expensive carts sitting in the parking lot, I drive it back in while shaking my cane at people. Sometimes I don't feel like fiddling around with charging it, so I tell an employee. I don't shake my cane at them.

Yeesh, it's bad enough when people leave their normal carts strewn over the parking lot (I've served as a cart monkey in the past, myself), and it gets THAT much worse when it rains, 'cuz NOBODY brings them back in. With the motorized ones...Dear Gord O_O I can only assume they're quite weatherproof.

Not weatherproof enough alas, water in the motor can damage 'em, plus driving around unlevel parking lots is bad for 'em too. Plus ppl steal the damn things.

I love the "I've looked everywhere". Really? You looked for eggs in the pet food aisle? The condiment section? The household odds & ends section where they put things like fuses and lightbulbs? Then it's no wonder you couldn't find the eggs, as every supermarket or grocery store I've ever been in put the eggs with the dairy products like milk and cheese, which is weird because eggs aren't technically dairy but that's generally where you find them.
