  • Need good thoughts for my pupper

Well, she's not really a puppy anymore, which is likely part of the problem.

My sweet, rambunctious beagle, Ziggy, tore one of her ACLs a few weeks ago. The vet recommended crate rest (though not super strict crate rest, just calm and quiet) for a few weeks to see how well it would heal on its own before we discuss surgery. Zig has never been one to be calm or quiet and even at 9 years old, still acts like a puppy more often than not. She loves being outside, chasing things, wrestling, digging, and all those other doggie pleasures. Which is probably how she tore her ACL in the first place. So she has not been real happy with being confined.

Over the last week or so, I'd been relaxing her restrictions a bit since the leg was looking better. But today I noticed her walking flat footed on her good leg. Which according to some brief Google research might mean something wrong with the tendons in that foot. I'm really, really hoping they're just strained and that a few days' of strict(er) rest will help as we can't afford the ACL surgery let alone a surgery to repair tendons in the other foot too. Even with surgery, that leg will probably never get back to 100% and it just breaks my heart to see her like this.

In any case, I'll be calling the vet on Monday. She's probably due for a checkup on the ACL anyway and we'll see what's going on with her other foot too.

Aww poor pupper! Good luck! Thinking about you and doggie!

Sometimes when you limp on one leg, you overcompensate a bit, meaning you rely on the god leg so much that it starts to hurt, too. Hoping that's all it is on the good foot!
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

I know little about dog breeds, but I do know that beagles are by nature super-energetic, so I can imagine how "not happy" she is with being confined. Hope the little pupper gets back to normal quickly.

Sorry to hear your pupper is having issues. My boy, Max, tore his ACL when he was about 2. My regular vet thought it was a hip issue and sent us to a specialist since he wasn't comfortable with a big surgery (country vet, small office). Specialist determined it was not the hips but instead his ACL. We did opt for the surgery and 6 weeks to the day of surgery, he tore the other one. We had the same surgeon do that repair as well. Max went on to live to the ripe old age of 13+.

Best wishes that things work out for your pet. I understand the pain of watching them deal with an injury.

The soonest I can get an appointment with my vet is next Monday. We've had a pretty big outbreak of canine influenza here, so I suspect that's part of the reason they're so booked up.

We have a surgery consult today with another vet. Mr Jedi's not happy about it because it's going to be expensive. So we'll see what the other vet has to say.

Ziggy had her surgery on Friday. Everything was textbook routine, no surprises. After an overnight stay at the hospital, she came home Saturday afternoon. Apparently as soon as she woke up she started licking the incision, so she has the cone of shame at least until her first checkup. Crate rest until Tuesday and then slowly start rehab exercises.
