  • How to Tip

I am fairly young, and as such, am significantly less experienced in most fields.

I was wondering if those of you who receive tips/know enough about them could give me some basic guidelines of how much I should tip in various situation. This is mainly because I don't want to accidentally snub/piss off my servers, but at the same time, I don't want to overly reward mediocre service.

    Thank you!

Here's one site's opinion on the matter: http://www.businessinsider.com/what-...tuation-2014-4 -- Naturally, opinions may vary.

Basically -- If something has gone wrong (e.g with your food), see if the server/manager can fix things. That can absolutely have an effect. If they seem to honestly be trying to rectify a bad situation, give them the benefit of the doubt; if they're utter jerks, well, reduce the tip to the low teens (hey, they still need to get paid) --- in my experience, leaving a really small tip sends a message about the service, much more than stiffing the server would do... Another general rule of thumb is to tip on the pre-discount total (e.g. if you have a big coupon that knocks $20 off of a $50 order, tip based on a % of $50, not $30).

(PS Standard note to all -- Take any discussions of whether to tip AT ALL/"Why does tipping exist?"/etc to Fratching, where they belong.)

AFAIK, right now the market in general dictates a 15% tip for good service, 20% or above for exceptional service. I usually tip 20% anyway, unless the service was really bad (meaning the server specifically, because it's not the server's fault if the cooks get it wrong). I just try to be generous if I can because I know restaurant work is demanding, hard work, and they have to put up with way too many idiots.

I agree with MoonCat's advice. Also, if you're getting take-out from a restaurant, you should tip then, too.

My BFF actually laughed at the idea of tipping on take-out. I pointed out that while the server didn't bring me a drink at a table, they still packaged up food and brought it out to me. That's worth something. And, as I eat out frequently, I would much rather be known to the staff as the regular who tips a bit too generously than the guy who doesn't tip enough - or at all.
