  • Yeah, That Made It So Much Better!

A woman came in to pay her fines. She owed for some traffic violations for which a jury had fined her the maximum plus the court costs, etc. Not a small amount!
She was angry (understandable) but was huffy/belligerent to the poor cashier who had been serving her. She had trouble accepting the total figure the cashier gave her and demanded to see an itemized statement. The cashier provided it. She then began to challenge every listing and amount.
I was called over to explain everything. (Joy!) After repeating the explanation for a fourth time and even showing her the verdict with the fines, and a run down of the costs, she still insisted the figures were wrong and that she was not going to pay that much.
I finally told her that I had explained everything to her, there was no error in the total, and she either needed to pay or make arrangements to do so.
Her response? She cursed and threw something. Her iPhone 7. It hit the floor. Hard. The screen cracked. The body dented/bent. It stopped working.
She saw what she had done and went hysterical. I just stared. So did everyone else around us.
She picked it up, howled and ran out.
She still is going to have to pay those fines.

Lucky for her, the new iPhones were just announced.

Unlucky for her, she probably can't afford one thanks to all those fines. Any chance this little tantrum can result in a contempt citation?

      So

So her answer to getting a bill she does not want to pay is to create still another expensive bill that she will have to pay.

Boy, that is an expensive way to live life.

It seems that life is not only more difficult for the stupid...but expensive as well

I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Sarcasm dear, sarcasm. I’m well aware that dealing with civilians in any capacity will skin your faith in humanity alive, then pickle anything that remains so as to watch it shrivel up into an immortal husk thus reminding you of how dead inside you now are.

Poor impulse control. I'm thinking not only is that how she behaved in court, it was that sort of behavior that landed her in court in the first place.

A jury trial for a traffic case? That alone is noteworthy. I'd love to know more about this.

You know, right, that she's going to try to blame her broken phone either directly on you, the cashier, or the department you work for? After all, it wouldn't have gotten broken if YOU hadn't made her so mad that she just couldn't control herself. It's not her fault, oh no! Everyone hates her and is just trying to take advantage of her...

I sense a little girl who found out early on that if she threw a big enough tantrum, she got her own way, and can't believe that it didn't work this time.

I actually know how that could happen. She got an unfair ticket and ignored it. any letters she got about it threatening fines and penalties were thrown unopened into the trash. One day, she had to do something involving her license or car and was told that she couldn't because she had unpaid fines that needed to be resolved.

After throwing a fit there, she stormed down to the court office and demanded to have everything fixed because she was special and that ticket was unfair and she didn't get any letters. She demanded someone higher up, so told her that she could pay or she could get her day in court. Of course, she knew that if someone who had the power to fix things only heard about the unfairness of it all, she would be able to leave with no fines while flipping everyone off.

Then she went home and recreated with her friends who told her that she could demand a jury trial instead of sitting in front of a mean old judge who wouldn't care about her, just about the rules.

Of course, reasonable people hearing her story would understand and forgive her, so she demanded a jury trial.

Now, I have been a jurist and I have spoken to other people who have served. We all tend to go into the trial with an open mind. We are also people who understand that sometimes bad things happen to innocent people, so we listen and we pay attention to the case.

She would have had to been extremely special for the entire jury to decide to throw the book at her.
