  • Sexual Harassment Training

I just finished my sexual harassment training and let me tell you, never before have I been so informed on sexual, racial, and sexist slurs. I'm all caught up with what the cool kids are saying now! Although I don't think that was corporate's intention.

Do YOU have any stories of training or actual harassment in your workplace? I've been sexually harassed by customers but not fellow employees.

Not in my last workplace (that I'm aware of) but back in the day, when I worked on that weekly paper ...

Guy's wife informs him (while he is visiting family overseas) that she's leaving him. Yeah, he was a twit, but seriously? (This was B4E -- Before Electronics -- so it was probably via a phone call, as opposed to texting or email.) He proceeded to go off the deep end. First he informs some of us that he's getting spirit messages from God through songs on the radio, then he starts going around getting "frisky" with some of the younger women, including one in his own department. One of the other women in editorial complained (to me) that he would come up behind her and give her a kiss on the back of the neck (not just once, either).

I asked why she didn't report him.

She insisted she was giving him an "angry glare" every time he did it.

We went round and round with this numerous times.

I finally got annoyed and pointed out that apparently he was interpreting her "angry glare" as a sign of repressed passion or something BECAUSE IT WASN'T DETERRING HIM.

Later found out that the woman in his department finally had enough and reported him. Management didn't do nearly enough (IIRC they moved him to another newspaper) but I supposed that was at least marginally better than doing nothing at all.

There was the one guy at the swamp who got busted for shoplifting, and on his way out announced he was gay and us truck unloaders had been harassing him about it.

Which was a total lie, and management knew it. We didn't even know he was gay. But we still got a talking-to about it.

OK, I'll bite: Even if true, what does that have to do with his stealing?

Not a damn thing; he just wanted to take all of us out along with him.

Nothing. It's the same as when some people try to play the race card. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy wasn't even really gay.

We have to take sexual harassment training every year. Most all of us get along so well, that we usually just joke around that at least we know we are harassing correctly.

We just started annual harassment training (via computer courses on the company intranet site) this year.

And the examples they gave did sound corny (like saying about a male coworker "that guy is such a fruit", and such) but, it's like I explained to a new hire a couple of weeks ago when she was in the back office completing her training courses "at least it gives you an example of what to look for and what is considered inappropriate."

Frankly, I'm glad we have the computer courses now to help the newer ones but for those of us who have been around for years, I think we can pretty much tell what's okay and what isn't.

Dang it, you guys get training!!

I had to work out how to do it on my own!
We are the willing, led by the unknowing, doing the impossible, for the ungrateful, we have now done so much, for so long - for so many, with so little, we can now do anything with nothing!!!

LOL, Rebel. Back when I worked in the warehouse, I had a very sweet, very polite co-worker who was in his 70's. One year, we had to go to sexual harassment training and when we got back, he said that he was worried that there would be a test next year and could I help him.

"Sure, of course, what do you need?"
"Just stand there for a minute."

He gave me the look over with the most lascivious expression that I have ever seen on a person. Then his expression turned normal and slightly worried as he asked me if he did that right.

Cue much laughter on both our sides.

This is all I can think of and I think before that when they were told they had to go to sexual harassment training, Ziva asked why they had to be trained to do it.

Should I ask how well you did ... ?

My only complaint about my training was that there was a voiceover reading EVERY SINGLE BLOODY WINDOW OF TEXT. She was not reading it particularly slowly, but still, I could read to the end of the text while she was still in the middle ... but I couldn't move forward until she was finished.

Last time I enjoyed being read to, I was five years old.

I just had to go through some mandatory training (regulatory compliance for drug manufacturing... ugh), and thank God they didn't do that. (Though you did have to turn off the sound to be able to skip ahead before the voice was done reading...)

I do think I lost a couple of pounds from having my brain dribble out of my ears, though. I mean, gee, did you know that something that is "life-threatening" means that you're in serious danger of death? Who knew?

We did a sexual harassment training on the computer a few months ago, but there were definitely some mixed messages in there when it came to some of the pictures that accompanied the text. In one, a woman was sitting in her chair while a male coworker massaged her neck...and she seemed to really be enjoying it. In another, a guy was sitting at his desk while a female coworker was leaning over the desk, grabbing him by the tie...and he looked totally excited. LOL I thought they could have done a better job on the photos.
