  • New car and near miss

On New Year's Eve, we traded in our 2004 Chevy Cavalier (with broken mirrors, bad brakes and a leak in the floor) for a gently used (former rental) 2016 Kia Optima. Love the new -- well, new to us! -- car, it is very comfortable, smooth ride and has some neat gizmos like a back-up camera.

Well, tonight I was driving home and nearly ran over someone. Pitch black outside (our city is allergic to lighting its streets, apparently), she was wearing dark clothing and ear buds, crossing in the middle of the street with her head down. I did not see her until it was almost too late, then I slammed the brakes. Thank God, that car has excellent brakes. She looked up startled, then waved apologetically and hurried across.

Needless to say, that shook me up a bit. If I'd been driving the old car, I would've hit her. If I hadn't been paying attention, I would've hit her. Calls that close, I do not need.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.
