Good for the baker for not falling for that "exposure" nonsense!

Yes, good for her. How many of us on this website have faced the old "Do this for free and we'll give you exposure" thing. I remember this one guy everybody loved who used to post here. He was a bartender and a magician, and he'd get this kind of offer all the time.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

Generally speaking -- Any place that can only "afford" to pay you in exposure isn't big enough for that exposure to be worth anything.

The classic line from show business is "exposure is what you die of when you can't pay the rent".

I've heard this quote before and while I dislike the guy who said it (I think), he's correct here.

"People will be talking about your brand!"

You know what else talks? MONEY. Fuck you, pay me.

I always notice that the people asking for free stuff think that 80,000 subscribers on youtube is something people should be impressed with (let alone be able to pull in enough people to someone like Universal Theme Parks that would even be noticeable.) They haven't figured out that not even youtube thinks you are anything until you break 100k. Even then people just say that is a good start. A "social media influencer" with less than 500k doesn't have a name strong enough to have much value.

Yeahhh, somehow I don't think "I made a cake for this big-name star and they didn't even pay me for it!" is the kind of "exposure" that most bakers would want....

There was a woman on here with the handle "spark" who made fursuits, plush animals and similar items. Beautiful work, very time-consuming and top-quality materials, so very expensive. And she's had more than a few customers use the "free advertising / exposure" shtick to try to low-ball her or delay payment or even outright get freebies (I can't seem to find that story at this time, but I do remember reading it.)

But yeah, we're supposed to spend lots of money and lots of hours making something to give away for free for the "exposure". Sure, I'll get right on that.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Lots of shows on HGTV and DIY are shot in my AO. Every time a new show starts my wife's business gets bunches of calls requesting free stuff or big discounts. Other than a few loads of mulch they had to pay for everything so far. She has contributed a lot to Habitat for Humanity both in products and labor.
